use the search and read the FAQ in future
iphones cant be unlocked, but they can be activated
this means you can use any AT&T sim in a us iphone, any 02 sim in a uk iphone etc
read the faq for more info
or look in the section about hardware unlocks, these are special sim cards that fool the phone into thinking its a different type of sim...

Default iphone on pas as you go?

on youtube they do it with a t-mobile sim using

    Unlock the SIM-lock

    1. Open installer, and install the update if prompted.
    2. Go to sources and tap Edit and Add
    3. Add this URL: http://i.unlock.no
    4. Tap Done and then Refresh
    5. Go to Install (at bottom) and scroll down to the Unlocking Tools category and install AnySIM
    6. When installed you can press the home button, and you will find a new AnySIM icon on your home screen. Launch it and follow the instructions.
    7. The unlocking process will take about 5-10 minutes, in the end it should say it was successful!
    8. To clean up your phone, launch Installer and uninstall AnySIM. Then go to Settings → General → Auto-Lock and set it to a prefered value.

That only works for firmware 1.1.1 which was on iphones sold a few months ago. The current firmware (1.1.2) there is no software unlock for yet.
Your best bet might be to try and find a 1.1.1 firmware iphone on eBay, as you won't find these in the shops.

Also, am I right in saying the *sim route will work for hardware unlock with pay as you go?
What country are you in, as another option is to buy a thing called a turbo/stealth sim for ~80 USD, this will unlock a brand new shop-purchased iPhone.

Thank you is there any way to down grade it? and the turbo/stealth sim reliable and just a insert and work straight away without no playing around with it?

    you cant downgrade to unlock

and if you use a stealthsim you need to jailbreak and activate the phone

So is there anyway to unlock the phone by activating the phone by calling that *#301# then downgrading it then installing the software what unlocks pay as you go sims or other network contract sims.

From not much experience downgrading means that your putting it to its earlier software which lets you use the software what is used on the 1.1.1 version?

Downgrading won't work, I'm not going to go into the detail of why but trust me - no.

What jailbreaking will do is allow you to install third party apps on your iPhone, and also to avoid activation. To confuse things, this involves downgrading from 1.1.2 (as sold in shops) to 1.1.1, and then back up to 1.1.2.

Jailbreaking does NOT unlock - there is no free unlock solution at present for new shop-bought iPhones (with the horrible 1.1.2 firmware, which all of them will have).

Your options are: Buy second hand 1.1.1 iPhone and do NOT upgrade the firmware

Or buy a new iPhone from the store. Jailbreak (good guides online), should take about 10 - 20 mins being careful.
Then, buy a turbo sim / stealth sim / other option like this which sits over your phone and fools the phone into an unlock.
Hard to get your head around it all at first!

You can do pay as you go using AT&T...

    read here:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/02/iphon...the-right-way/

really simple to do, basically just change the social security number to 999-999-9999, and after failing the credit check, you are given the option to do the pay-as-you go.
