    UPDATE: I got it
Just needed quotes, this helped me:
[SOLUTION] iPhone shut off during boot / Stuck Apple Logo - Page 43

Now I'm just trying to get the disk mounted. /mnt2 is empty and I get "operation not supported by device" when I try to mount /dev/disk0s2

Yep that would have worked too, just a few seconds too late

What am I doing wrong with the mounting?

Ok I got it. Using Putty I did "mount -t HFS /dev/disk0s2 /mnt2".

I'm backing up my data now. This is awesome, I've been working on this for 3 days straight. So glad I didn't have to lose everything.

    Thank you very much msft.guy!

    iRecovery -s

It should output something like this:

creating ramdisk at 0x44000000 of size 0xf2d600, from image at 0x41000000
Also check the instructions on the wave as most up to date/relevant.

Except he's got an iPod.. mw and arm7_go commands aren't present in your iBoot..

I've followed your instructions using a 3gs but its still not working - any ideas? (Details posted below):

    Procedure followed;

put iphone 3gs into recovery mode
create custom firmware and extact the ramdisk
use ramdisk builder to build custom ssh ramdisk
command line commands: irecovery -f 018-8231-001.dmg.ssh

this results in the file uploading with the '..... for about a minute' then showing 'status error'

    irecovery -c "ramdisk 0x90000000"

    returns nothing
    irecovery -f kernelcache.release.n88

this results in the file uploading with the '..... for about a minute' then showing 'status error'

    irecovery -c bootx

    returns / does nothing

I have tried this technique on my iPod v2.2.1 also (obviously using different firmware) where the message 'status error' doesnt occur but nothing happens.

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hey everyone. So I had a problem a while back which you can read about here:
    http://www.hackint0sh.org/f203/141073.htm

Thanks to msft.guy's amazing method/procedure, I was able to get every single file back (after a few months of leaving the phone bricked until I found it after scouring the internet and trying about 3 other methods)!

Through trial and error, I was able to overcome the occasional "why isn't it working, I'm following the step exactly!" on a few steps. Most of which were because some commands needed to be typed a specific way, or in a specific sequence after doing something with the USB conneciton.

When I get the chance, I will post up the exact sequence of actions and commands I used to retrieve my data (I already typed them up to remind me in case I needed to ever do it again in the future). Check back in a few days.

Finally, I need to say a long overdue THANK YOU to msft.guy.. I was fortunate enough to be able to get back years of contacts, pictures, videos, and everything else, and I owe it all to you - you're nothing short of a genius!

Has anyone got this working on an iPhone 4 with 4.1?

I've been trying to get this to work by following some of the pwnstrap process using irecovery, greenpois0n and itunnel_mux.

I ran pwnagetool on the phone to create a pwned IPSW, then extracted the restore DMG and loaded it into msftguy's ramdisk builder tool to create 018-7082-092.dmg.ssh.

    Then tried the following

    Code:
    C:\Users\H\Documents\My Dropbox\iphone_ramdisk\irecovery_windows>irecovery.exe -v -p "c:\Documents and Settings\h\Desktop\iPhone3,1_4,1_8B117_Custom_Restore.ipsw"
    Attempting to connect...
    Checking c:\Documents and Settings\h\Desktop\iPhone3,1_4,1_8B117_Custom_Restore.ipsw
    Found firmware at Firmware/dfu/iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu
Please run greenpois0n now, press enter when completed (BE SURE TO WATCH FOR "Jailbreak Complete!" and that you do NOT GET "Jailbreak Failed!")
    Run greenpois0n here...
    Code:
    Uploading iBSS...
    [==================================================] 100.0%
    Command completed successfully
    Jumping...

    C:\Users\H\Documents\My Dropbox\iphone_ramdisk\itunnel_mux_rev71>itunnel_mux.exe --ramdisk ..\018-7082-092.dmg.ssh --kernelcache ..\kernelcache.release.n90 --verbose 9
    [DEBUG] locate_AMRecoveryModeDeviceSendFileToDevice: Located at 6796EBB0
[INFO] Waiting for a device in Recovery mode to connect..
    [DEBUG] recovery_connect_callback_icmd
    [DEBUG] uploadFile: g_builtinApi: 0; libmd_private_api_located: 1
    [INFO] Ramdisk ..\018-7082-092.dmg.ssh loaded
    [DEBUG] uploadFile: g_builtinApi: 0; libmd_private_api_located: 1
    [INFO] Kernelcache ..\kernelcache.release.n90 loaded
    [DEBUG] recovery_disconnect_callback
The phone just sits there with a blue screen and the ssh ramdisk does not appear to have booted up as subsequent itunnel_mux --lport 22 doesn't work when I try to connect with putty.

    Any ideas anyone?

msftguy has suggested trying a pwned kernel cache (as the one in the pwnagetool IPSW won't be pwned) and pointed me to tools to do this however I've not had a chance to try this yet.

msft.guy is right. You can't run SSH without the kernelcache patched to allow unsigned code.

I am very new and very noobish, so sorry if I ask redundant questions or if I just don't get it... It's just that I would love to get my data safely from my 3GS in the recovery boot loop... I also already posted to the wave, but maybe someone else here on this forum can help me.

I have an 3GS with the new BR (at the point when I got it in December 2009) and 3.1.2 FW. I think my 3.1.2 SHSH is saved on Sauriks server, but I don't know how to confirm. I downloaded tiny Umbrella, because it was mentioned somewhere that this could tell me whether they are saved or not, but I don't know how to access that information - maybe because my iPhone is now in the recovery boot loop. But I did press on "Make my life easier" back when I got my iPhone (December 2009). It had/has a tethered JB (blackra1n).

This is what I did so far:

    1. Downloaded "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw" somewhere
    2. Downloaded Pwnage Tool, version 3.1.4
    3. Pwnage Tool: Expert Mode, Select iPhone 3gs, Select the ipsw file mentioned above, double-click on build, define output filename and location --> created: "iPhone2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Custom_Restore.ipsw" Are the specific options in the Pwnage Tool important? I think I checked "General" (a green check-mark appeared next to it) and then I hit the Build button in the red font... everything correct here?
    4. Renamed custom ipsw to *.zip
    5. Extract "018-6051-014.dmg" from the root folder of this zip file (is this the right one? It's 13mb, but there's also a 307mb one in there)
    6. Downloaded the "RamdiskBuilder" tool and extracted it, started the tool
    7. RamdiskBuilder: Enter IV = fd19726dc6b555b6bb4dbbcd91d1e7c0, Key = fb2792b935fb9cd183341cb24539376556f8b7b8f887eb90fc ebaa0daf2d6d9c
    8. RamdiskBuilder: Select Ramdisk --> 018-6051-014.dmg
    9. RamdiskBuilder: Got the following output --> Private Paste - Pastie
    10. Two new files have been created in the RamdiskBuilder folder: 018-6051-014.dmg.dec (~16mb) and 018-6051-014.dmg.ssh (~16mb)
    11. ?

Since I have the 3GS with the new bootrom, it seems that there are additinoal steps needed (in msft.guy's instructions), but I don't know when in the process I am supposed to do them (and also how to do them)...

Other people with the same problem might also benefit from a really basic, easy and comprehensible todo list..

Please give feedback if everything was done correctly so far and what the next step(s) would be... many thanks!

Can your force the iPhone into DFU? that will allow you to manually find your ECID and then you can use tiny umbrella.
