I'm awfully confused - and if somebody could help, that would be great. I have the image loaded in VMWare, booted, and I'm logged in as root. I understand that I am to mount the VM disk as a shared network drive in Windows by using the VM's IP address. However, the VM doesn't seem to have an IP address? The network setting is still set to "Bridged" (as it was), and I'm not sure why it doesn't work. 'ifconfig' only shows the loopback device.

Also, once this first part gets resolved.. What do I do with it then? I mean, there isn't an XCode for Windows, so how does the 'toolchain' fit in with dev'ing for the iPhone? I'm confused as to what I use the mounted network drive for!

Any help you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated - it's SO frustrating trying to get started coding iPhone apps on a Windows box!

EDIT: Turns out, all you have to type is `dhclient`. The ethernet adapter is eth4 (I had tried eth0 and eth1 to no avail). So, now what? I have it mounted in Vista as my Z: drive. But now what?? Anyone?

    Thanks!

If you want to use XCode, you need a Mac and you don't need this image.

This VMWare image is only acted as a server and does not have any graphical interface.

What you can do is described in the README.txt.

First use dhclient to fix your network and get ip address.

You can use smb mount / ssh / scp to the server.
You can also edit the file using your favorite editor using smb mount or scp protocol.

Then use make to compile. and make install (after changing the IPHONE_IP in the Makefile) to install to your iPhone.

If you don't know how to use Linux Server, buy a Mac or use hackint0sh and build iPhone app using Xcode.
Touch Dial is an easy-to-use application for one touch dial / sms icon on the home screen for iPhone.

This app can read the accelerometer and do phone dial or SMS dial for the same number based on the your setting for Portrait or Landscape Mode of iPhone.

Oh! Okay, cool! So I can code in Windows, scp it over to the server, build it there and install it to my iPhone? Great - can I dev GUI stuff on Windows? Or do I need to use XCode and related tools on a Mac for that?

    Thanks javacom!

Just look at the sample project UICatalog.
It is the sample code on UIKit for gui coding.

Interface Builder is only available in Mac Xcode.

you have to use iPhone to install a free app from App Store and that will update your iphone

and then restart your iphone and try to launch UICatalog again

    Default compile ldid in Linux

With the help from Saurik, you can now build the ldid in your Linux
ldid is use to fake codesign the binary in iPhone firmware 2.x, it is more convenient to codesign it in Linux, especially when you want to package it in cydia debian package

Here is the instruction to compile the ldid binary in Linux

    Code:
    wget http://svn.telesphoreo.org/trunk/data/ldid/ldid-1.0.476.tgz
    tar -zxf ldid-1.0.476.tgz
    cd ldid-1.0.476
    g++ -I . -o util/ldid{,.cpp} -x c util/{lookup2,sha1}.c
    sudo cp -a util/ldid /usr/bin
If you need to codesign the iPhone binary in Linux add this (as one line) to your build script
(assume your toolchain is in /toolchain2)
    Code:
    export CODESIGN_ALLOCATE=/toolchain2/pre/bin/arm-apple-darwin9-codesign_allocate; ldid -S $(PROJECTNAME)
For other options of ldid, please see
    http://www.saurik.com/id/8

Where is the download link now? The existing one appears to be password-protected.

You have to go to www.iphonefix.de and there to download. The username and password is dynamic generated and valid for 2 hours.
