[Sync] Desktop Linux as a sync platform for the iphone
Hi,
I seem to be surrounded by Mac OS.X and Windows Users. The first group has no need to worry about iPhone syncing, the second one maybe masochistic, loves Microsoft Office and a sometimes strange behaving iTunes ...
I AM THE THIRD GROUP.
I use ubuntu/gentoo as a desktop platform, my Weblinks are on firefox, my email and contact program is evolution, and I don't like to install some Win XP program just to sync my data files or start a virtual machine platform to run windows.
Thus I would like to open a thread to arrange a communication platform, where people with similar needs may help each other. Maybe one of the mods can arrange this thread is being organized in a way that it won't vanish in these endless messages here (thanx).
1. iTunes: I don't want this
----------------------------------
I'll start with a link I found today. This should be a good start to arrange a communication platform between a running desktop linux and an iPhone
http://code.google.com/p/iphone-usync/
Okay, now let's see how this starts ....

Okay, i myself am also in that 3rd category. iTunes for my iPhone was literally the only reason i still had windows installed on one of my HDD... rather than full Ubuntu. Someone turned me over onto this article:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Po...Devices/iPhone
Which helps you sync/manage your music on linux via Amarok (and it's all wireless). The only thing is... is that you can ONLY sync music... no photo albums, or Texts, or Numbers, or links, or videos or anything like that. It's a step in the right direction though...

I came across this a while ago, he says it'll be released soon, but nothing has changed for a while. Hopefully something may come of it. Good links so far.

I know someone already mentioned Amarok, but I just wanted to say that it does work very well. But like they said it only syncs music. I've been using it to sync music in Ubuntu for the past couple of months without problems. I did have a few configuration issues when I first set it up however. In order to sync music album cover art I had to use this as the pre-connect command in Amarok:
sshfs -o workaround=rename quino:/private/var/mobile/Media /media/iphone
Without the '-o workaround=rename' it would not sync album cover art.
BTW I don't use the ipod-convenience script and I didn't have to create any symlinks to get it to work. I just let Amarok mount my iphone using the pre-connect command above.

I transfer videos with Amarok. So long as they are converted to MP4 beforehand, this just works
I'm just trying to figure out how to create a new photo album to be able to sync some pictures. I can copy them into the camera roll (minus the thumbnails) but I wanted a 'normal' photo album. Any ideas?
