Default [SSH] Connecting via O2 PAYG GPRS

    All,

I have a unlocked iPhone running on a PAYG SIM on UK O2.

I have modded my preferences.plist and added my proxy.pac and I can now browse websites via Safari.

Now onto the next stage. I want to be able to ssh from my iPhone, over PAYG GPRS, to my server at home.

I can access the home website via HTTP over GPRS and can access the sshd daemon on the home server via my 802.11 connection, but ssh from the iPhone over GPRS just times out.

I'm guessing it's down to having to route via the O2 proxy? Has anyone else tried this? Do I need something like corkscrew to push SSH through the O2 proxy?

    Cheers,

    Rich.

I guess the carriers block sensible ports (22 for ssh) on GPRS.

Sorry, should've mentioned I run my SSHD server on port 443, so it *shouldn't* be blocked.

    Cheers,

    Rich.

Also, while you will get an EDGE icon on your phone, with 02 pay and go you will only get GPRS speeds.

443 is also a port assigned for secure connections (https)

Connecting (outgoing) from your iPhone the to a secured remote Website (using any port) is not the problem.
In fact the Connection from remote source to your iPhone (ingoing) is probably blocked.

Ask your carrier if they don't block have rules for this.

Yes, that is why I use 443 - it's usually not blocked at a proxy. When at work, I connect to my box at home via 443 on their proxy and tunnel / port forward everything I need through that, so was hoping to do the same here.

As you say, I've got a HTTPS connection over port 443 to another host via GPRS, so that works fine. The question is whether ssh needs to know about the proxy and this is why I'm getting nowhere, or whether O2 is protocol / packet sniffing / doing DPI and blocking anything on 443 that is not SSL. Unfortunately, I can't image their call center knowing

    Cheers,

    Rich.

Default [SSH] Connecting via O2 PAYG GPRS [solved]

OK, this seems to be working now.

I created the iPhone toolchain, compiled corkscrew, added the necessary to the ssh config file and bingo, got through to my SSH server first time.

I'll write it up proper when I get a chance and post a link here.

    Cheers,

    Rich.

Update: Link to article with ARM binary for corkscrew
