Exclamation [Problem] The iPhone cannot be synced

    Hey guys!
I did a clean restore to OS 3.01 of my jailbroken iPhone. I could not restore it on my computer, as I would get an error 6. So I restored it on another computer, which worked fine. I can now sync the iPhone with my PC (the one which gave my the error 6) just fine until I try syncing music, which is when it tells me:

The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be synced. The required disk cannot be found.
The iPhone "iPhone" cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to.

I got my music back from my iPhone before the restore (the computer I used to sync my iPhone which crashed, leaving me with my music solely on the iPhone) with a Touch Copy-like program (don't remember the name, but it was available for free on the internet).

    Help!

Both the restore (which failed) and the syncing music require accessing and transferring much larger amounts of data than the other syncing tasks.

Sounds like you have a USB problem, most likely faulty USB drivers, or potentially USB hardware (which generally would require a motherboard replacement).

It could also be something else wrong with your computer hardware wise (internal HD failing, faulty motherboard, or bad RAM)

Try copying your music to an external disk and then try to sync your music from the other computer that worked for restore. This will rule out an intermittent fault with the iPhone and also any problems with the USB cable.

If that works, then you should be taking a closer look at your computer, do you have problems copying large amounts of data to other USB disks or devices? Do you have other unexplained crashes?

OK, I will try to update USB drivers.

I'm using a newly-reformatted IBM Lenovo R60 with Vista Business installed.

I haven't noticed any particular trouble with USB yet, except (and this may be significant), flash drives I sometimes plug into one of 2 particular USB ports (out of the 3 available on the laptop) aren't detected by Windows.

Of course, I plug in my iPhone into the 3rd USB port.

Darn it this is really pissing me off

Updating the system didn't change anything, I'm still getting the same error.

I have yet to try syncing my music with the computer I did the restore from - even if this succeeds (which I suspect it will), this still doesn't indicate the problem (seeing as my laptop wasn't able to restore the iPhone and the other computer was, I suspect the iPhone isn't the problem, but rather the laptop). What could it be? Could a program be creating conflicts (Anti-virus, firewall, anything?)

Thank you for your help, I really appreciate it.

Oh, and also I think I remember reading somewhere one shouldn't simply restore a jailbroken iPhone - that the apps installed through Cydia and the likes would remain on the drive, occupying space which couldn't be used. Could this be causing a/the problem? I simply restored from a fresh firmware through iTunes....

    still no solution found :-(

P.S.: If I try restoring to a legit IPSW on my laptop, I get an error 6.

So, I now know my laptop is the problem, because I was able to sync perfectly with the other computer (music, etc.)...

Is there something about Vista Business, Lenovo computers, or Zone Alarm (security suite) which could be causing this problem?

EDIT: My suspicions were correct: a program or service is interfering with the sync. Following instructions given by this article, I deactivated services and startup programs. I can now sync my iPhone succesfully. All I need to do now is gradually re-activate programs and services until I find the culprit, the one which gives me problems syncing. garykirsten63, may I suggest you try the same approach?

Deactivating Zone Alarm did it. However, I now have to find a solution: I paid for the Zone Alarm security suite, I don't expect it to conflict with syncing my iPod, I still want to be able to use it.

I authorized all Apple processes inside the Zone Alarm program control, "Super Trust" level, yet it would seem ZA is blocking iTunes on a deeper level... perhaps one of the services which allows communication between the iPhone and iTunes (Bonjour, etc.?)

You might be able to contact ZoneAlarm for a pre-release beta that fixes this problem. As far as I can tell, with the latest beta versions, the only users who are still experiencing this problem are running Windows 7 which is not yet officially released.
