Could you guys try iPhone Backup Extractor (iPhone / iPod Touch Backup Extractor). It is free, has a guy and similar functionality.

@Volkspost but what if I'm in recovery mode and I really need my data, do I first have to restore, and then use the mdhelper tool?

Default How to run this text file using windows 7

    chmod 755 mdhelper
    ./mdhelper -C .db

    This will extract call_history.db, keychain.db, sms.db and notes.db

    Hope that helps

    Hi,

I'm new to this post, and was tryint to retrieve my photos from a restore backup folder as well, but nor sure how to run the mdhelper text file? I copied the folder with all the numbers as the name to desktop and copied the mdhelper text file inside that folder, but not sure how to run the command you mentioned above (not shell savvy)? Using Windows 7.

These instructions are written for Mac OS X users and will never work on windows.
The backup format has changed a few times since this was written. You are off using a regularly updated tool, I usually recommend iPhone backup extractor Reincubate: Labs: Backup Extractor for iPhone: extract and restore files from an iPhone backup on Windows, Linux and OS X

The tool you mentioned above will not work for encrypted data from what I have read? Do you know of any way I can retrieve my photos from the encrypted back up folder? I can get someone's mac, but I just need my photos?

It is NOT possible to retrieve files from an encrypted backup. If you know the password for the encrypted backup, you can restore the backup to your phone and then extract the files from your phone.
