    Maybe you don't lose the contact photos if you sync with an address book that contains photos. But the Windows and Outlook address books don't, so in that case you lose them.

    Probably good to look around ~/Library for a while before restoring. There you'll find the SMS messages etc. And ~/Media/DCIM contains the camera roll, if you want to save that.

    Installing Cydia programs on a phone that has no internet connection: read this.

    Editing binary .plist, .strings, .nib and .xib files:
    * on your computer: Windows tool / conversion website.
    * on your iPhone: convert those files in a terminal with plutil (installed with Erica Utilities) or edit them with iFile (Cydia links).

    uhhhh...... no. You won't. When you sync to iTunes it saves all that crap then it just puts them back.

    And for the guy saying it won't sync your contact pics with microsucks outlook because it doesn't do photos: you're wrong too. iTunes syncs the iPhone from a backup created on its own. It has nothing to do with anything else other than iTunes.... and iTunes DOES save photos-contacts.

    Where are you guys getting your info from?...

    instant classic.

    All this assumes you let iTunes put a backup of the phone back. For various reasons this is not advisable. So you need to rely on synchronization. Then everything we said applies.

    why? Why would you NOT let iTunes put a backup back on the phone? What "conspiracy theory" do you guys have now?
    Unless you are giving/selling/trading or unlocking someone elses phone on your comp, there is no reason to not use iTunes with your iPhone.

    Outlook syncs photos, at least in the 2007 version, not sure when the feature was added but its been in it for a while now.

    To be honest I'm not sure why a backup would be a problem either, the itunes backup feature won't touch anything that isn't there on a standard, non-jail broken iPhone, which shouldn't be a problem when going from one firmware revision to another. Its not as if it takes a full image of your phone, jail break apps and all.

    Not sure either. There have been problems reported, but I'm not about to do a full search for them. Probably most serious for people who had a problem before they restored because of corrupted settings. So it's often recommended on the forums that people set up as a new phone with iTunes.

    Anyway, it's always a good idea to back up important stuff independently from iTunes.

    Your all wrong!

    iTunes backup saves ALL your settings including jailbreak'd application settings and various other stuff.

    Don't believe me? well try it then! When you restore from the backup and put the same apps back using installer you will see all the settings are back already! without you doing anything!

    In theory thats great - in practice it causes wierd conflicts that cause the phone to become unstable and non-responsive and in some cases even interfere with wi-fi connectivity.

    If you have a non-jailbreaked phone then you can use a backup as it will JUST put back normal settings but then everytime you sync it will overwrite the information.

    There are loads of threads on this so just do a search for "backup" or something!
    iPhone US 8GB
    FW 1.0.2--> iUnlock--> iPhoneSIMfree--> 1.1.1 --> 1.1.2--> Soft upgrade 1.1.3 --> 1.1.4 using signal.app
    iPhone UK 16GB
    FW 1.1.3 OOB --> 1.1.4 --> iPlus 1.2 unlocked!

    <----If I helped you out, rep points are always nice (thanks for that idea!)

    That's right! I put the backup image back on my otherwise perfect iphone and the mail.app started to crash. Turned out to a be documented bug with backup assigning wrong permissions causing it to crash.... Setting up your phone as 'new' looks to be safer...
