Default iNdependence and Activation on v1.1.2

    Hi All,
Long time lurker, first time poster. One of my friends has just bought himself an iPhone (brand new UK model). He is moving to Australia next year, so does not want to sign up for a new contract with O2. He is already an O2 customer so as far as I can see the phone just needs activating so that he can pop his own SIM in, am I right?? If this is the case then can anyone confirm or deny that iNdependence works for Activation only??

    Thanks For Any Help

    Tom

Since when does INDependence activate a 1.1.2 iPhone?
You need to understand that each firmware version is different, even if 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 aren't as different as for example 1.0.2 and 1.1.1.
I don't see any way right now to activate 1.1.2, unless you have an official contract
or maybe you should await a couple of days until a possible solution is available.

Here's a link to the INDependence developer site: http://code.google.com/p/independence/

Sorry that I need to be harsh on you now but if you would have checked the various posts/threads regarding 1.1.2, you would have learned pretty fast what is possible and what isn't. Don't be lazy, READ.

Regarding the O2 SIM: there seems to be a misunderstanding regarding SIM cards and providers. I tested it for myself with T-Mobile Germany and I suppose it isn't much different in the UK: you can't use the iPhone with ANY O2 or T-Mobile SIM, it needs to be one specifically "configured" for the iPhone. During the activation process, ITunes connects to the activation server of O2 or T-Mobile and checks for the SIM and the contract. So if you don't have an iPhone contract, you can't use your O2/T-Mobile SIM in your US iPhone. If you have an iPhone contract, it is possible to switch the iPhone SIM for your old SIM if your carrier is willing to do that but unfortunately this doesn't help you much regarding what you want to achieve.

Meaning: right now, there are many possibilities. Whoever wants an "official" iPhone with FW 1.1.2 , needs to bite into the sour apple and subscribe to his local iPhone provider.

1 - Thanks for jumping down my throat

2 - I apologise, but I seem to have not made myself clear. When I asked if iNdependence worked for Activation only, i was referring to WITH 1.1.2. I know that the Firmwares are very different, and I know that anySIM etc do not yet work with 1.1.2. What I was trying to establish was whether or not you can use iNdependence to simply Activate a virgin 1.1.2 phone. I had already searched the dev wiki, this forum and everywhere I could find but nowhere explained whether Activation requires the phone to be Jailbroken or not.
Also, I recall people swapping their AT&T iPhone SIM's for one's from other AT&T phones, I believe this was detailed on TUAW by Erica Sadun. SIM's are not unique to each phone, they share a basic design, that is why you can use an iPhone SIM with a different phone to the iPhone.

I don't know if this is a language issue (my mother language isn't English but German) but you really don't seem to understand.
I provided the link to the INDependence developer site, you just need to go there and READ. It takes maximum 10 seconds to realize that your question about using INDependence with 1.1.2 doesn't make any sense.

Regarding the iPhone SIM, Erica is right, this is an ordinary SIM like others. What YOU don't seem to understand is the unique process involving iTunes in activating the iPhone and using it with an "approved" provider.

That said, I think I already told you more than I should because like I said before, you could have used the SEARCH function and you would have had all your answers in 5 minutes. Of course you can keep on asking but don't be surprised if nobody actually answers.
