Wow!! This is the best method ever!! No more installing of pesky programs to get it done.
Be advised the ringtones dont show as custom but as native iphone ringtones
^^ And that's why this is the best method, it doesn't interfere with iTunes' synced ringtones.

Can anybody please give some more instructions on how I would do this? I just got my iPhone a few days ago and unlocked it using iPlus2.0b, I am not sure which program is used for sftp or how I would go about using it, would really appreciate some help on this, thanks.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention that I am using windows and I see that fugu is for mac, what about be a good alternative program to use?

You could do it with iphonebrowser I guess in the PC (I have not tried it yet though - little free time...)
iPhone 4.0, Vodafone Greece.

Hey guys, just use this:
http://iphone.heinleins.com/
A VERY simple application, and it allows ALL audio files, even YouTube sounds.
+Rep if you found my post helpful!

^^ No that program sucks. Only allows 30 seconds, where as the thread starter's method allows any length.

While putting ringtones of any length is great, obviously some songs would make much better ringtones if they started at your favorite part.
Quick guide to trimming songs for ringtone use:
1) First go into iTunes preferences and ensure that your Import settings create AAC files.
2) Find the song you want as a ringtone and start playing it, once it reaches the desired starting point for your ringtone pause the song and note the number of minutes and seconds into the song you are.
3) Right-click the song in iTunes and select 'Get Info'
4) Under the options tab, check off 'Start Time' and insert the time you noted before.
5) Hit OK, then play the song, if it's starting too soon, add a second or more to the start time, if starting too late subtract some time. Make sure it's perfect before moving on to step 6. (Also, you can indicate tenths, hundredths, or even thousandths of a second by adding a decimal point after the time, for example: 2:12.562 to really fine tune the start time.)
6) If you want the song to play through after starting, skip to step 7, otherwise find the point where you want your ringtone to loop back to start, and add this time to the 'Stop Time' field as you did with the start time.
7) Once your ringtone sounds perfect, right click the song and select 'Convert Selection to AAC'
8) After the song finishes converting, go back into the options of your source music file and uncheck Start and Stop times.
9) Play your new AAC ringtone, trimmed to size!
Remember the file needs to be renamed from .m4a to .m4r before moving it to the iPhone.
Enjoy!

i just use Audacity (free program) to edit out the part of the song i do like and exporting it before putting it on my phone
like the choruses for example
i dont know why you would put a whole song it, sounds like a waste of memory.
i'm on 1.1.1 (yeah, old school)
while your importing ringtones, you might as well delete the ones you wouldnt use. I did, like those duck and motorcycle tones.
also, when you change the file name to .m4r make sure you add a space
for example:
linkinpark.m4a = is how it looks after the iTunes AAC conversion
but you have to rename it to:
linkinpark .m4r
MAKE SURE YOU ADD THAT SPACE BEFORE THE PERIOD
or it wont work took me a whole to figure that out.
