as many of you have done, i have disabled the "backup" feature in iTunes because it takes a few hours each time the phone backs up since it is doing an image backup.

i like to know if there is a simple app (official or unofficial) that will backup the contacts, map bookmarks, browser bookmarks, weather settings, stock settings, photo albums etc. on my iPhone? a typcial example i am thinking if TimeCapsule, but this app has no 2.0 update and does not work on current firmware at all (the author has not posted any update to this).

i don't use google/windows contacts, so i cannot use "sync" in iTunes to sync them (no where to sync). after a restore, i discovered that iTunes does NOT save any of these settings unless you have done a backup.

It's actually not an app but a way to get the update files. You have to SFTP into the iPhone with Cyberduck or Fugu (on a Mac) or WinSCP (Windows) and goto
/private/var/mobile/Library
It's all in there. I just download the complete content to my PC and have a backup when needed.

i like to know if i restore my iphone to a clean firmware image, do i simply use SFTP (i use cuteftp) to upload the Library folder (and all subfolders) to /private/var/mobile/ and everything will be restored perfectly?

what about file and folder permission? what do i need to reset it? i am backing up to a windows box (vista 32), so all the bsd/unix/apple os permissions are lost. which do i need to set to 755? 777? 775?

please help.

Once you restore to a new firmware, the subfolders to Library will already be there. just copy the content in there. To me they always had the correct permissions then.
I know its not the most simple practice but makes me feel safe just in case anything goes wrong :hack:

Those are symlinks created by the iphone, dont backup them. they will be created automatically.

So far I have saved address book, calander, call history, mail, notes, and sms.

Am I missing anything important?

Just backup everything in

/private/var/mobile/Library

and you'll be fine

You could also just easily use my backup/restore software (see my footer), but it's only running on MAC.
However, it will save and restore all your PIM and apps / 3rd party apps data and the apps themselves.

So after a firmeware restore you can just restore from the backup and are back to all your apps and settings.
