OK i might have some terms mixed up here with the iphone so sorry if i do. anyway i am in an area where att gets 1 bar. however they have a contract with a local gsm carrier that has a tower right on top of me. with my older unlocked moto phones i could always go to network selection and choose to register the phone on that network and i could get full bars and be happy. however with the iphone i am unable to find where or if i'm able to do this. I have been told look for the carrier button below the airplane mode in settings but i do not see it there. if anyone knows how to do what i want please let me know.

You mean in the Settings application, below "Airplane Mode" and "Wi-Fi", you don't have an item that says "Carrier"?
