I wonder what parts of OSX are directly dependent on the kernel. I mean - what framework etc. need to be changed when changing kernel versions?
looks like 8.10.x kernel builds/revisions have System.kext and dsmos.kext dependencies.. w/ the 8.9.X kernels generally the 10.4.9 kexts remained static.
obviously jumping from 8.9.1 to 8.10.1 should be done along w/ the 10.4.10 update (after which some 10.4.9 kexts may carry forward such as AppleACPIPlatform IOATA SMBIOS etc).. however, and as a side, my GF's HTPC runs an 8.9.1 kernel on a 10.4.10 kext/system (3-4 kexts withstanding) and the only issue we've encountered is incompatibilities w/ the most recent Parallels release (initial 3.0 release fine).. all drivers/kexts are working w/o issue
