Unhappy should I mail in a jailbroken phone?

My spirit jailbroken 3gs is completely unresponsive. Removing it from the car dock on a hot day seems to have fried something. No combination of button mashing will revive it and it is not recognized by itunes. The apple store is three hours away. Has anyone ever had any success shipping one in to apple for repair under warranty. I have searched extensively on google and this forum and cannot find any advice on this. I may decide to drive the three hours if need be.

Sorry, this needs to be moved to 3gs, i guess.

Depends. In most cases, if the phone is completely unresponsive, the Apple people will just reflash or replace. If that's the case, I don't believe they will be able to tell it is jailbroken. If the device boots at all, I would recommend attempting to restore a standard firmware on it -- if you are unable to do that, odds are they will be unable to get the phone to boot in its current state and you should be OK.

I'd suck it up and drive to the Apple store. That way you're in their presence, can see what their doing, and likely will get an on the spot replacement. I can appreciate it's a long drive, but it's shorter than shipping it off for a week or two...

Well, it certainly won't boot using any combination of buttons.

I had the day off to travel to a wedding so I put in $50 of gas and set off without AC to the apple store in Durham. They had qued access supposedly for the tax free holiday. So after driving two hours and waiting on line an hour, I was told that the bottom indicator was red and the warranty was voided. The phone hasn't been spilled on (yet) or dropped in the water so I argued with the twirp a bit. Asked him why he was calling me a lier etc. and left barely avoiding a punch out. I guess the next step is to send it in. According to BBC (YouTube - ‪BBC Watchdog - iPhone water damage indicator issue‬‎) apple has said that all indicators must be red in order to void warranty. I wish I had known that when I was in the store because the one in the headphone jack definitely isn't.

I wonder if anyone has had any success painting over the indicators.

I mailed it in and managed to convince apple to replace it. It arrived yesterday. Now the next problem is whether or not I should restore using itunes to the spirit jailbroken image that Itunes has saved, or if doing so create a problem with the baseband.

    I wouldn't.

Use one of the backup extractors to get your SMS, Call History, and other databases, set the phone up as a new phone, copy the databases over to their respective locations, and then jailbreak with JailbreakMe -- more reliable and functional than Spirit.
