Spirit then Pwnage tool?

Quick question: Once the 3GS (05.12.01) is jailbroken with spirit, is it possible to then restore to custom firmware using pwnage tool 3.1.5 or equivalent?

I gave it a quick go earlier and suffered from a 1600 error. In the interests of time I just restored back to regular firmware and jailbroke again using Spirit so I'm back to square 2, as it were. :)

Not unless you have a SHSH for OS 3.1.2 and first restore back to OS 3.1.2

Spirit is a userland jailbreak, it does not patch anything in NOR (the startup code that is used during early-boot before the filesystem is loaded)
