Default Want to sell, but I'm stuck!

I'm selling my friend's 2g for him and its screwed up. I got it back to emergency calls but before it was stuck in DFU. Is there a way to check what version its running so I can JB and unlock for him? I tried redsnow but it would hang when restoring from iTunes and I have no idea why. Can anyone help me please? TY!

For iTunes restore failures - we can't help you without a log file.

TinyUmbrella The Firmware Umbrella will tell you what iOS version and baseband the iPhone currently has - even if you are stuck at the "slide for emergency" screen. It can't get this info if you are stuck in DFU or recovery mode though.
