Default Visual Voice Mail gets constantly reset

I have a 3GS 4.1 (8B117), BB 06.15.00, jailbroken and unlocked. All works well. My carrier (Rogers) changed my plan to include Visual Voice Mail.

However, if I shutdown the phone (hold the power button for a few secs) or close down the Phone app, when I enter the Phone app and go to the VoiceMail icon, it tells me "To retrieve voicemail, first set a password and greeting "SET UP NOW". I have to setup the VVM every time I power on the phone.

    My question:

Is this problem related to being jailbroken and/or unlocked?

    OR

Is this a problem with the carrier???

Is there a setting in SAM or somewhere which s causing the iPhone to lose the VMM settings?

    TIA

You only need SAM to activate the phone after restore.

Once you have this working, you can uninstall SAM from Cydia. This will probably fix your problem.
You will still stay unlocked, and you should be able to swap SIM cards without requiring re-activation.

Well, I uninstalled SAM, SAMPrefs and ACutil and still the same problem. Called up the carrier (Rogers) and they had me Reset Network Settings, they reset the voice mailbox and still the same problem. If I shutdown the phone and restart it, I have to setup my VVM again...

I don't have much installed on the 3GS. In Cydia, I have the following still installed:

Cydia Installer, Erica Utilities, OpenSSH, PushUtil, Stockify, ultrasn0w, VLC media player

    Any other ideas?

    Thanks

So this phone was originally locked to another carrier than Rogers?

Lockify is part of SAM (at least I think it is) - puzzling that this wasn't removed when you uninstalled SAM

VisualVoicemail isn't my specialty,I was guessing that because SAM generates a new ICCID each time you reboot it might cause problems with some things like this.

Yes, this was a FIDO phone and I jailbroke/unlocked it so I could use it on ROGERS. It's is not "Lockify" which is left but "Stockify"...

Rogers claims there was a bug (exactly this) with VVM pre-4.1 and suggests I upgrade to 4.2.

Now, I have SHSH blobs saved for 4.1 and 4.2.1+ (as displayed in Cydia) I am trying to determine if there is an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 wit 06.15.00 on a 3GS. It's hard to find a reliable source of info with all proper notes and warnings. A few weeks ago, someone on another forum strongly advised that I stay away from 4.2.1 on the 3GS for now.

I know this request is getting off track a bit, but should I go to 4.2.1 (only if untethered). If so, what tools/path is the best? Pinkra1n claims to be able to do this. My phone was currently broken with ultrasn0w...

    TIA

Read: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm and start using the right terms.

Your phone is unlocked with ultrasn0w. You are not hacktivated. Ultrasn0w is not a jailbreak.

For 4.2.1 Don't trust any jb tools other than: redsn0w and pwnagetool. Always download these tools from their original sites. Everything else is a scam/virus/spyware etc.

Good news about the saved SHSH.There are two ways a 3GS can be jailbroken (untethered) with iOS 4.2.1.

If you have an old bootrom 3GS, then you can use a special pwnagetool bundle with Pwnagetool 4.1.3 to make a custom IPSW that will restore your phone to 4.2.1 (untethered)
For new bootrom 3GS, there is a jb monte technique that is currently in beta testing, which will give you an untethered jailbreak at 4.2.1 (and will likely continue to work on 4.3) - but you will experience problems restoring your iPhone to 4.2.1 due to the 6.15 baseband. Don't restore - update instead.

Yes, I know the right terms. I type ultrasn0w when I meant to type redsn0w...

I have the new bootroom, (or so redsn0w claims), so I think I'll wait for the the monte technique and wait until there is some positive feedback on that before upgrading. You mention Upgrade vs Restore. I assume the upgrade is done via redsnow or iTunes?

I was referring to iTunes. See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm for some more details. Also see Update #3 and Update #5 of Dev-Team Blog - Ultra-recycle

My interpretation from reading Update #3 is that the "custom ipsw" for the 3GS/4.2.1 is designed for old bootrom only devices.

So.. to reinstall 4.2.1 with your 6.15 baseband, you need to restore to 4.1 pwnagetool custom IPSW (with saved SHSH), then update to 4.2.1 normally via iTunes and then jailbreak with redsn0w (either "tethered" or eventually via the "monte" technique)

I'm using the beta version of the monte technique (the beta version requires that you have 4.2b3 SHSH saved and legal access to the 4.2b3 IPSW [limited to developers only]) and it's quite stable. The iPhone dev tem has this same monte jb technique working against iOS 4.2.1 for users who have a 4.1 SHSH saved (and a copy of an original 4.1 IPSW for their device) - however it's not been released yet (likely will be released soon though)

Well, a few months have passed. I have now upgraded my 3GS to 4.3.1 (8G4) with Baseband 06.15.00 using Sn0wBreeze and UltraSn0w respectively. I was hoping that going from 4.1 to 4.3.1 would resolve my problem but alas it does not.

I have Visual Voice Mail enabled for my phone. The first time, I setup my VVM and (for example) record a personal greeting. I can then see all the saved messages in my voicemail box. When I power off my phone or shutdown the Phone app, my VVM gets reset. I have to re-enter a password and personal greeting. This would mean that I have to do this every day when I power on my 3GS.

Does anyone have any ideas why this happens or what I could do to solve the problem? I was confident from various postings that going from 4.1 to 4.3.1 would solve the issue...

    TIA
