    Default Updating to Unsigned 3.1.2

    Hello Everyone,

I currently have 3.0.1 on on older 3GS (week 26). I would like to update to 3.1.2 and ideally keep my jailbreak and settings if possible.

I have registered with Saurik's server in Cydia and understand that 3.1.2 is unsigned.

I am sure that this question has been answered many time before, but after searching, could not find the thread I am looking for.

Could someone point me to a thread that can guide me through the unsigned update without losing my settings, jailbreak, and baseband?

(I am not opposed to doing a restore first if absolutely necessary, but most importantly want to retain the ability to tether and keep my baseband.)

Thank you and my apologies for the redundancy of this type of post!!

You can't "upgrade" with a custom IPSW. This is currently not supported (Cydia cannot handle this).

So you need to do a backup with iTunes, then a restore with custom IPSW from pwnagetool (if you use ultrasn0w unlock, then you need to reapply that) and finally restore your iTunes backup.

Pwnagetool guide: iClarified - iPhone - How to Jailbreak Your iPhone 3GS Using PwnageTool [Mac]

Restoring from iTunes backup can have unpredicable problems with jailbroken iPhones - poor battery life or instability. It is a scenario that is not tested or supported by Apple (obviously). My advice - try it and see if it works okay. Many people have no problem.

You don't need SHSH stored on Saurik's server for this at all (custom IPSW patches out the SHSH checks - until such a time that you restore legit iPhone OS and then the SHSH checks return)
