Default Succesfully Jailbroke with Redsn0w but cannot open Cydia.

Followed these instructions to jailbrake and update firmware/baseband to 4.2.1 and 06.15.00-6.4, this much was successful.

    http://www.techknowl.com/download-redsn0w-0-9-6-b6-hactivate-iphone-3g-3gs-sam.html

However cydia will not run, so I tried to "just boot tethered now" but this just sends me to a picture of a Pineapple while making my phone vibrate, my phone never passes this screen. I can't get pass this screen.

The only reason I want my iphone jailbroken is because I moved out of country and need it unlocked. So my ultimate goal here is to download whatever I need to unlock it in cydia...

I'm running a 3GS with the newer bootram. My previous experience is unlocking/Jailbreaking my phone with Blackra1n, which was so much easier.

    Can anyone help?

    Thank you

Are you sure you have new bootrom? Did you actually verify this?
    http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index....ootrom_version

When redsn0w asked you for an IPSW, what IPSW did you give it?

When redsn0w asked you - new or old bootrom, what did you answer? If you didn't get this question, then you have probably given redsn0w the wrong IPSW.

Blackra1n/blacksn0w was a bad jailbreak/unlock combination, we've discussed this many times. It may have been easy for the user to jailbreak/unlock but it was a ticking time bomb - that eventually screwed your phone (not everyone was affected)

Download iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm and use that.

You need to give redsn0w the IPSW that most closely matches the iOS version your iPhone is actually running. As you said that you updated to iOS 4.2.1 - then you need to tether boot with a kernel from a 4.2.1 3GS IPSW.

Thank you, I have this file downloaded already. I will give it a shot. To clarify should I be trying to run tethered with this IPSW or am I re-jailbreaking with it?

first try "just boot tethered" with that IPSW, if that doesn't work - then try again with same IPSW but only select "install cydia" - that is the same as "rejailbreaking" for your purposes.

Whatever you do... don't restore via iTunes.

    Unhappy

Thank you, that made cydia work. However I screwed something else up...How SHOULD I restore if I can't use itunes?

I was reading somewhere else to erase some cydia file in iphone explorer if it was crashing, unfortunately I did that before I tried your method (which seemed to have worked) and I was unable to save anything I downloaded in cydia...

    I'm such a n00b

Do you have a SHSH for iOS 4.1 saved? If so a "pwnagetoool custom iOS 4.1" is the only thing you should restore via iTunes.

You should NOT restore original iOS 4.2.1 via iTunes, you should NOT try and restore pwnagetool custom iOS 4.2.1 via iTunes either.

Wait for more details from the iPhone dev team - they might eventually have a solution to this.
