I have 2G unlocked and jailbroken sitting at Firmware 3.0 currently. Can I update to the latest firmware at all? If so please provide details. From what I've read, it doesn't seem possible.....

With pwnagetool you can create a custom firmware and restore (not upgrade) to 3.1 you will keep your unlock your phone will still be jailbroken.

This is only true for 2G phones. Other models need to be careful to avoid upgrading baseband to a version that can't be unlocked.

1) use this tutorial if you have the possibility to use a mac: iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.1 Using PwnageTool (Mac)

2) search google for downloading a custom firmware 3.1 for you 2G

Thanks for that. One last question, does it matter if I use Itunes 9? I see the latest is 9.0.1, will this still work?

Restore after creating the custom firmware. Follow instructions on iClarified.

How do windows users can use pwnagetool? any tutorials out there? (i'm stuck on 3.0).

In my case (2G Unlocked 3.0.1 and Windows) this worked:

Just upgrade your 2G to 3.1.2 in Itunes.

Wait until process completes, the 2G will start with a Itunes connector

Start blackweather

Press "Make it ra1n"

wait for 2 - 3 minutes.

After reboot, the phone is unlocked again, you can now start blackra1n to uninstall or jailbrake.
