Question Redsn0w stuck on "waiting for reboot" iPhone 3GS 4.0.1

I recently jailbroke and unlocked a iPhone 3G 4.0.1 with redsn0w and ultrasn0w and had no problems. I tried to do the same with a friend's iPhone 3GS 4.0.1, but it always gets stuck on the waiting for reboot after the second upload.

I'm using redsn0w 0.9.5 beta 5, and I have tried running it on a PC with xp, unplugging and then replugging the USB cable, and I don't know what to try. Does redsn0w even jailbreak 3GS?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

So redsn0w isn't compatible with the 3GS on OS 4.0.1? Do you know of any other programs I could use to jailbreak it? Or do I have to wait until something new comes out?

Well you can use PwnageTool 4.01 if you have MAC.
    Dev-Team Blog - foursome news

Summary: Currently, PwnageTool only works on previously jailbroken 3GS devices with the old bootrom.

    * If you have a Jailbroken iPhone 3GS with the OLD BOOTROM and you DID NOT use Spirit to jailbreak then you can create the ipsw with PwnageTool 4.0 and restore with your jailbroken recovery mode.
    * If you have an iPhone 3GS with the NEW BOOTROM this is NOT supported by PwnageTool 4.0 PwnageTool 4.01

Well, my friend's Iphone 3 GS has not been jailbroken (only recently upgraded to 4.0.1 from 3 something), and I have a PC, not a Mac. Any suggestions?

If your friend was not smart enough to backup their SHSH for 3.1.2 before 2 February 2010 or their 3.1.3 SHSH before 21 June 2010 and they have now upgraded to iOS 4.x then there is no way to jailbreak.

Redsn0w does not support jailbreaking the 3GS past iOS 3.1.2
Pwnagetool requires that you stay on the pwnagetrain - your friend jumped off by allowing iTunes to upgrade his iPhone to 4.0.1
Spirit only works on iOS 3.1.3

The SHSH is personalised by Apple for your iPhone and a specific iOS version. Apple stops allowing personalisation for older iOS versions when they release a new version of iOS. Right now for the 3GS, you can only request a 4.0.1 SHSH from Apple.

Apple blocks downgrades to older versions of iOS unless you backed up your SHSH. If a saved/cached 3.x SHSH does not exist for this device there is simply no way to fake one or use one from a friend's iPhone or even convert a 4.0.1 SHSH.

See Caching Apple's Signature Server - Jay Freeman (saurik) for more details
Use TinyUmbrella to get your 4.0.1 SHSH cached and start practising safe upgrading.
