Holy hell, that little trick worked for me. I had the correct fw selected, and it got stuck on the reboot screen.
I unplugged the iphone side usb, then held home button while plugging usb BACK into iPhone, and redsn0w automatically finished the job. I was jailbreaking and unlocking an iPhone 2G.

Done a jailbreak with sn0w 08 on a friends 2G & had his issue using with he's XP box.
After 5 mins I got fed up looking at a blank screen waiting for the payload to run so I pulled the USB lead from the phone, tried to reboot "nothing happened" reconnected the USB lead again & suddenly the phone run the payload successfully.
I wouldn't recommend people start pulling leads but by accident it seemed to work for his problem.

When I follow the instructions in redsn0w, I get to the part that says "waiting for reboot." It stays there indefinitely, no status bar progress, nothing going on with my phone, just a black, unlit screen, for 5, 10, 15 minutes.
I found a few suggestions on fixing this by googling. The first suggestion was using a different USB port, but that didn't change anything.
The second was to go into DFU mode before starting redsn0w. Doing this caused it to bypass the countdowns and breeze through the uploads and get to the "Done!" screen in about 5 seconds... all the while my iPhone screen stayed black. When I restarted the iPhone, of course, the phone had not been jailbroken. (This same thing happens if I get stuck at the "waiting for reboot" screen and hit "cancel" in redsn0w, then immediately run the program again.)
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong? I've attempted it at least a half dozen times now. Thanks!
EDIT: Thought it may be relevant to point out that I'm using Vista 64-bit.
Plug and unplug when said waiting for reboot.

Yup still not working
So I have an Iphone 3g running firmware 3.0 and I'm trying to use redsnow 0.8. I have now tried to jailbreak my phone on 3 computers and none seem to work. I've used one running Windows 7 RC, another with XP SP3, and my laptop in which I am running Ubuntu with a virtual machine of windows xp sp2. All of them keep hanging on "waiting for reboot". I've tried switching usb's and I've ensured that telnet, messenger, and terminal service are all running. I still get nothing.
The only thing I can think of would be that I'm trying to use a different firmware then what is on my phone. I have a file from icommunity. The file name is iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw. So first off is this correct? If it is can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong and if not where can I get the proper file and what is it?
I've tried about ten times now and I'm getting really confused. Thanks in advance guys.

firmware modding?
just point of clarification, you're firmware modding? I always thought that meant actually changing something on the electronics of the iphone *duh*
anyoo, I had a similar problem with redsnow 8 on mac. theres another thread here which discusses this problem. The solution there , primitive as it was, is when you get to the stuck screen, just unplug the iphone from the cable and then replug it. Then everything continues and it continues the process.
worked for me.....

I followed many solutions on the internet, including the ones mentioned above. I have a mac pro, and non of the solutions worked for me. But this is what I did AND it worked like a charm all the way through:
- updated my iphone to the latest firmware
- downloaded the "3.0" firmware on the computer
- downloaded redsn0w 0.72
- MOVED TO A PC with windows XP (note windows emulators on other OS's will NOT solve the problem for you)
- Connected the iPhone to a computer USB directly (no USB hub was used)
- Opened redsn0w and followed the instructions
AND it worked absolutely fine.
I guess the Mac OS contained the glitch after all.
