Maybe you are using an aluminum Macbook? couldn't get into DFU mode with that one. Try a white/black macbook or do it from windows (even through parallels or bootcamp on an aluminum macbook). There seems to be a new lock from Apple.

My iPhone 2G is on 3.0 now, everything working fine!

If you upgrade to OS X 10.5.7, DFU will work. I have an aluminium Macbook pro, and DFU modo did not work until I upgrade to 10.5.7

I only have 10.5.6, and after a few tries, the jailbreak finally worked. You shouldn't have to wait long.
Apparently, the jailbreak only worked when I failed the DFU mode thingy (on purpose) one time (dunno if it works after multiple times).
    I have redsn0w 0.72.

    Default Got it to work

I had this problem, and moving the USB plug from one port to the other magically made it work. So try that.

    Default redsnow wouldn't reboot

i tried and tried to get my iphone 3g to jailbreak with Redsnow, but it kept on hanging up on the reboot screen.

what i was doing wrong was:
i was using the wrong firmware!!!!! i was using the firmware for the
2g iphone. As soon as i corrected this the phone completed the
    jailbreak.....
