redsn0w+limera1n fun -RS 0.9.6b2 with PwnageTool DFU mode
It looks like geohot’s recent limera1n exploit for iPhone3GS/iPhone4/iPad/ipt3g/ipt4g/atv2g will be very beneficial to jailbreakers and unlockers for the next few months (at least). geohot’s limera1n program and the alternative greenpois1on program both use his same exploit, and hopefully SHAtter can be saved for some later device.
In the meantime, we’ve also incorporated the limera1n exploit into redsn0w. But we’ve added a few extras:
- custom bootlogos for iPhone3G/iPhone3GS/iPod2G users (with qualifying bootroms)
- an option that implements the “DFU” button in PwnageTool. This button (which you an use from Windows) lets you prepare your device for a custom DFU. Even if you’re purely a Windows user, you can get a trusted friend to run PwnageTool over your IPSW to create a custom IPSW. You can now install that custom IPSW on your own Windows box, after you run this redsn0w version.
This latest redsn0w is available at:

Those windows users with 3GS and 3G who want to stay unlocked but also upgrade to 4.1 - this is your best option yet. Stay away from limera1n or greenpois0n (they will kill your unlock)
You should still be very careful and only obtain 4.1 PwnageTool custom IPSW from a trusted source (ie a friend you know and trust).
Please note: any attempts to post download links for pre-made custom IPSW in this thread (or elsewhere in this forum) will be deleted and you risk being banned for encouraging piracy.

hooray, I was hoping redsn0w would get the DFU mode module. Time to go home at play tonight.
I haven't researched this completely yet, but I would imagine, for those windows users. One might use a VMware
hackintosh install to make the file.

Guide to install leopard, I will go this method before looking for other "trusted" sources.
I have read it works, but can be a little slow. But I like my tinfoil hat right where it is.

Please help, trying to upgrade to newer firmware from 3.1.2!!!
I have a 32 GB iPhone 3Gs with firmware 3.1.2 and baseband 05.11.07. I am currently unlocked and jailbroken but I am very interested in upgrading to a 4.x.x firmware. I have downloaded 4.0, 4.0.1, and 4.0.2 and tried doing Shift + Restore through iTunes and I cannot get past the 3194 error, even after changing the notes to what saurik suggested for his server "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" and I continue to get the error. (also, in Cydia it shows that the only SHSH I can restore to is 4.1 and I know that unlock and jailbreak is not possible through 4.1) Please help.

Then you are looking at the wrong thread. I've moved your post to a more suitable thread. You need to use custom IPSW made with PwnageTool 4.1.2 and be sure to put the phone into pwnagetool DFU mode before you restore.
As you only have a windows machine (I guess this is the case because you mention shift+restore) then you need to find a trusted friend with a mac, get them to make a custom IPSW and send it to you.
Use redsn0w 0.9.6b2 to put your iPhone into pwned DFU mode and restore with the custom IPSW your friend made for you.
Do not try limera1n, greenpois0n - these will not work in your situation. The latest sn0wbreeze might work, but we will never recommend it on this forum.
