iam trying to jailbreak my iphone 3GS, currently on version 4.2.1...however the red snow application always freezing on the same point " waiting to reboot" and nothing happens. I tried to change my usb port, i even ran it as an administrator as im using windows 7, but no different. Anybody know what the issue can be and how to revolve it?

Are you sure it is a 3GS and is running 4.2.1? The most common cause of this message is that your phone is not running the same OS as redsn0w is sending (in many cases it is OK for the OS to be in the same series eg redsn0w plus a 4.3 IPSW will work on all 4.3.x and redsn0w plus a 4.0 IPSW will work on all 4.0.x

Secondly, redsn0w is designed to be run on a phone that has been just restored, if you have already started using the phone then the results can be unpredictable (95% of the time it still works)

Thirdly - have you tried the CPU affinity tweak (task manager, right click on process and choose set affinity, then choose the first CPU only)

Finally - redsn0w is very dependant on a reliable and standards compliant USB connection, if you are using a non apple USB-30pin connector cable or if your computer has a flawed USB driver or buggy USB interface these can all prevent redsn0w working.

Iam sure its a 3gs with firmware 4.2.1, thats what my itunes states everytime i plug my phone into the pc. I will try try the task manager tweak and see what results i obtain. Is there any other method you can recommend for jailbreaking except using this particular version of red snow?

Redsn0w should work to jailbreak but depending on whether you have an old or new bootrom 3GS, you might be stuck with a tethered jailbreak.
I would recommend backing up your partial SHSH with iFaith before you start

Greenposion will give an untethered jailbreak on both old and new bootrom 3GS but it doesn't hacktivate.

i believe i have the old bootrom since the 4th-5th digit of the SN are 31, i read anything after 40 is new. I also believe I have the MB model which states that it can be untethered. Not sure what you mean by backing up my partial SHSH with ifaith. I have already tried redsnow a few times and it keeps getting stuck at the "waiting to reboot" status. I then have to rescue my phone from the recovery mode it goes into during the process.

Also what do you mean by greenposion not hacktivating?

update: i tried the task manager tweak but still same issue

Model number has no relevance for the 3GS. This is only important for the 2G iPod touch.
The 3rd digit in the serial number is also important - it needs to be 9, not 0 or 1 (which is why I have always recommend that you NOT trust the serial number as there is so much partial/mis-information on the internet)

iFaith is a relatively new tool that can extract the partial SHSH from your phone (if you haven't damaged the SHSH with your jailbreaking attempts). This partial SHSH is enough to restore iOS 4.2.1 on your phone again. (and as Apple no longer allows 4.2.1 restores, it is a very good idea to back up the ability to do a restore before you make drastic changes via jailbreak)

I sincerely hope i have not damaged my SHSH. Iam going to download iFaith and take the necessary steps in order to back up my SHSH. Btw the third digit of my SN is 8. The exat SN is the following: (86831HGZY7K). Can you recommend what I should do now in order to jailbreak my iphone?

update: I got iFaith and tried to follow the on screen instructions however, everytime i get to the DFU mode part, it beings to count down from 30 and half way through it says " unsupported device". Whats going on?

You have an iPhone 3G NOT an iPhone 3GS - (I checked the serial number with Apple's own warranty page). The 8 refers to 2008 and the 3GS was not released until 2008.

Forget about iFaith (it doesn't support iPhone 3G) and SHSH - these aren't strictly required for an iPhone 3G

What IPSW are you trying to use with redsn0w?

Are you sure its an iphone 3G? The back of the iphone is slightly curved. I have always been under the impression that its an ipone 3GS. Mainly, also because I cant update my phone anymore through Itunes. It says that the firmware version of 4.2.1 is the latest version available for my device. I was using the following ISPW with rednow " iPhone2,1_4.2.1_8C148a_Restore.ipsw" . But I believe this version is for the iphone 3GS. Maybe that is way Itunes was not being able to read the file, and redsnow keeps getting stuck? I always thought i was carrying the iphone 3GS, dont ask me why.

You have an iPhone 3G - externally these two phones look almost identical.
The last iOS version for the iPhone 3G was 4.2.1 - Apple does not offer iOS 4.3.x for this model.
You need to download IPSWs that start with iPhone1,2 not iPhone 2,1
