Unhappy Really need help jailbreaking iphone, PLEASE! Cant find firmware!

Ok, I have an iphone 3g 8gb that I bought off ebay as an "unlocked" phone. I went to T-Mobile and bought a sim card on a prepaid plan. When I turn on the iphone it just says "connect to itunes" and "emergency calls only". I have been trying for days now to get this thing jailbroken so i can use it but the biggest problem im having is finding my current firmware and all that. The phone is locked so i cant go to settings and whatever else to find it. Ive tried dialing that *#3001#12345*# or whatever it is and it does nothing. Some people have said to just update firmware connect to itunes hold shift and click restore from "right pane?". When i connect mine to itunes it says "insert a valid sim to unlock this iphone" and thats the ONLY option i get. I cant use itunes to update it and i cant even use redsn0w because i have no clue what firmware version its currently using. PLEASE HELP!!!

ALSO would like to add: Ive downloaded redsn0w 0.9.2 as well as 0.9.6re8 and tried the jailbreak but I keep running into the same problem. When i select the firmware for the 3.0 ipsw it recognizes it and i click "Install Cydia" and it goes al the way to where it says "Downloading Jailbreak Data" and has the spinning (loading) icon. The phone finally turns off and right back on and i see the apple logo and then its right back to the connect to itunes/emergency calls only screen. So jailbreaking using redsn0w and the 3.0 firmware fail time and time again and any other firmware i download and use redsn0w on redsn0w says "unable to recognize specified ipsw".

Also would like to add ive tried running the Tiny Umbrella.exe and i get error message "No JVM could be found on your system. Please define 4exe_java_home to point to an installed 32 bit JDK or JRE or download a JRE from www.java.com"

I am running windows vista ultimate if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice!

Well, it's not factory unlocked (otherwise it would activate with any SIM card) so you should not restore/update it as you may not be able to go back.
The safest way is to get an AT&T SIM card (borrow from a friend, buy on eBay) insert on the phone and connect to iTunes, which will activate it and let you find out your current version.

I greatly appreciate the fast reply. I dont really know anyone with at&t so that i could try that though its a good idea...I did however find a program called f0recast from the snowbreeze website and it told me my firmware version and bb version, they are Firmware: 4.2.1 and BB: 05.15.04 . Only problem i see is it says that i can jailbreak my iphone but not unlock it. How can i do both? Model number is MB046. Thanks

Oh right, f0recast, totally forgot about it, sorry... The simplest way is use redsn0w, select the correct firmware, then select "Install Cydia" and also the iPad Baseband option, after that just install ultrasn0w from cydia.

The issue ive had so far with redsn0w is that the 3.0ipsw file will recognize and run but then the iphone just restarts in locked mode. Im guessing now though thats probably because im on firmware 4.2.1, not 3.0. :p

None of the other firmware files ive downloaded would even be recognized by redsn0w though, even after changing the file extension from .zip to.ipsw. I went to my folder options already and unchecked the known file types option too. It just kept saying cant recognize ipsw file in redsn0w. Im downloading the 4.2.1 ipsw right now though and its almost complete, so ill let you know if redsn0w refuses to acknowledge it as well. I appreciate the help element. :]

Ok, the install ipad baseband version is now showing as an option and redsn0w DID recognize the 4.2.1 ipsw. Going to try the jailbreak now. Hoping all goes well.

You don't have to add any source, just go to changes, refresh, update the essentials and then search ultrasn0w and install.

Default Ok, got it figured out.

Thanks element for your help. I appreciate it and once i used F0recast to get my firmware version redsn0w picked up on the ipsw and everything went smoothly. So for those of you who cant jailbreak/unlock your iphone because it is currently locked and saying connect to itunes/emergency calls only and you can not get the firmware or baseband numbers to download the proper firmware ipsw files, go to iH8sn0w.com | Jailbreak your iPod touches and iPhones and download the F0recast program. The other 2 arent necessary for retrieving your current firmware/baseband. Best of luck to anyone else going through what i went through to get this phone working! :p

We don't recommend or support any ih8sn0w software here. The software released by ih8sn0w isn't up to the same quality level as the software from the iPhone dev team.

See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm for links to official firmware.
