RedSn0w not hacktivating, stuck at 'Emergency Calls' screen.

I have a previously jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 3Gs that was running 3.1.2 firmware and I forget what baseband. I restored to the official 4.0 firmware via iTunes and then ran Redsn0w 0.9.5b5-4 to jailbreak.

Redsn0w ran it's process smoothly, but when it finished and rebooted went straight to 'Emergency Calls' screen. When connected to iTunes, it tells me my sim is not supported.

I've tried running Redsn0w over again, as well as restoring via iTunes again first. I keep getting through the process with no problems but ending up in Emergency Calls mode, with no hacktivation.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

(btw, iTunes also tells me my iPhone firmware is up-to-date, so I guess I'm now running 4.0 with whatever baseband is the latest one)

Update:

Tried to downgrade to 3.1.2, thought it might be a way to get past the 'emergency calls' screen.

Unfortunately my attempt to restore via iTunes after putting the phone in DFU mode resulted in a white iPhone screen and 'Error 1601'. So apparently I can't downgrade.

After rebooting the iPhone it is now back where I started, 'emergency calls mode' .... *sigh*

Used my husband's computer to downgrade to 3.1.2, downgraded successfully. Ran Redsn0w 0.9.3 (NOT the latest version) to jailbreak/hacktivate, also successful.

Hate to say I've been having the same problem.

After my upgrade to the iPhone 4, and my subsequent hand-me-down of my 3GS to my fiancee, and her subsequent hand-me-back of my old iPhone 3G, I wanted to install OpeniBoot on it and get iDroid running on the thing.

I've been mucking with it for 3 or 4 days and while I've got it on 3.1.2, redsn0w 0.9.2 just refuses to hacktivate. If I run it 3 or 4 times, it will eventually hacktivate, but when it does that, Cydia refuses to launch. Just opens and crashes, over and over. I've wiped the phone and re-restored, etc., and it just won't work. I don't have SSH on the device but was able to use DiskAid / iPhoneBrowser to browse -- removing the lists and deleting the cache didn't make any difference.

I'll give redsn0w 0.9.3 a shot tonight when I get home and see if I have any better luck. It's frustrating to be doing something so simple that I know should just work and have it abort miserably when I've done so much other stuff with my iPhone that "Just Worked (TM)". O:)

Not sure. I tried 0.9.3 just for giggles, but as expected, it didn't work. 0.9.3 isn't really the version that is recommended for my phone and for what I'm trying to do anyway. I re-restored back to 3.1.2 and then tried redsn0w 0.9.2 one last time and still got the same behavior. No matter what I did, the device wouldn't hacktivate. Ended up cleanly restoring factory 3.1.2 and using blackra1n, which worked like a champ, and Cydia is working as well.
