3G 4.2.1 Reboots to Emergency Call With Redsn0w

Dear Experts,

I recently decided to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone 3G and I am afraid I screwed it up. Please let me know if it's possible to recover after taking a look at the sequence of steps that I took and some other diagnostic information that may be helpful:

1. I downgraded from 4.2.1 to 3.1.2.
2. I attempted to jailbreak using RedSnow (outdated version), but it did not recognize the IPSW which I used to downgrade.
3. I tried various IPSW files that I downloaded from various sources, found one that Redsn0w was able to process.
4. I used it to run Redsn0w, suddenly Redsn0w threw an unexpected error and crashed. To my horror, I realized that I tried to run it with an iPad IPSW iPad1,1_3.2.2_7B500_Restore.
5. I tried to upgrade to 4.2.1 or to a different 3.1.2, but iTunes kept throwing errors (16XX for 3.1.2, and 20XX for 4.2.1).
6. I ran iREB-4.0.x-4.1-RC2.
7. I upgraded to 4.2.1 using official IPSW from Apple that iTunes downloaded automatically.
8. Now I am trying to run redsn0w_win_0.9.6rc8 with the Install Cydia and install iPad Baseband, but after fetching the baseband and running a couple of other processes, redsn0w says "Waiting for Reboot" and the phone reboots into Emergency Call mode and nothing happens. redsn0w just sits and waits for reboot. Phone sits in emergency call. Rebooting the phone into DFU mode doesn't help. Also, I'm unable to downgrade to 3.1.2.

• TinyUmbrella reports: Device Model: MB046LL/A, Installed Firmware Version: 4.2.1, Installed Baseband Version: 05.15.04-5.9_M3S2

Try a different machine, the iPhone connected via a USB hub, try running redsn0w in XP compatibility mode and the CPU affinity trick http://www.hackint0sh.org/f206/192951.htm

You should NOT have done anything permanent by using the iPad IPSW in older redsn0w.

We don't support or recommend iREB here.

In order to, hopefully, shed some light on the type of problem that I may be experiencing let me show you an attempt to downgrade from 4.2.1 to 3.1.2:

iTunes version: 10.1.1.4
iPhone 3G OS version (before restore/update): 4.2.1
Platform: Windows x64
OS Version: Windows Vista
Restore log: #1451082 - Pastie

Steps to reproduce problem:
1. Start iTunes.
2. Put device into DFU mode by pressing power for 3 secs, power+home for 10 secs, continue holding power for 15 secs.
3. iTunes pops window with progress bar: Waiting for iPod.
4. Then iTunes pops window with progress bar: Waiting for iPhone.
5. Then iTunes pops window: iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes.
6. I click OK.
7. I left-shift-click on Restore and navigate to file iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.IPSW (which I had downloaded from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....1_Restore.ipsw).
8. I click OK.
9. iTunes shows progress bar at the top: Extracting Software.
10. iTunes shows progress bar at the top: Preparing iPhone for restore...
11. Device shows apple logo, then shows Emergency Call screen.
12. iTunes pops window: The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1646).
13. I click OK.
14. iTunes shows on main screen: There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate.

Please let me know whether looking at the restore log gives you any hints as to what the problem may be.

I've never seen error 1646 before. Looks like your device isn't accepting the iBSS being sent.

Might be a hardware error (unlikely)
Do you genuinely not have SIM card in the phone?
Does a DFU mode restore of 4.2.1 work?

Regarding your questions:
Do you genuinely not have SIM card in the phone?
I genuinely did not have a SIM card in the phone. Since then, I activated the phone using a friend's AT&T SIM card. Now I can at least use it for WiFi.
Does a DFU mode restore of 4.2.1 work?
Yes, that's the only thing I can burn into the phone.

iBSS is one of the apple boot files that is used to go from DFU mode to a slightly more functional restore mode.

What 4.x SHSH do you have saved?

I didn't have any saved. I just connected my iPhone and saved the SHSHs using TinyUmbrella. See the names of the files below:

I don't need the files, but it is very good that you have them.

Start TinyUmbrella's TSS server and try a DFU mode restore of stock iOS 4.1 - see if that works.

After I put the iPhone into DFU mode by pressing power for 3 secs, power+home for 10 secs, and continuing holding power for 15 secs, the device does not appear in TinyUmbrella. It does, however, appear in iTunes as a device in recovery mode and it appears in the Windows Device Manager with "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" in the device description field of the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver Properties tab. Any suggestions to make it show up in TinyUmbrella?

Also, it appears in TinyUmbrella if I power the iPhone up normally (no DFU) but nothing happens when I click on "Enter Recovery" -- no reaction from TinyUmbrella and no reaction from the phone. Also, nothing happens when I click on "Start TSS Server."

You have put your iphone in DFU mode. Good.
tinyumbrella will not detect your device in DFU mode (that's normal) BUT .... at this point you HAVE to click on Start TSS server in tinyumbrella.

The problem here is you don't understand how umbrella works and how to use it correctly.

When you click on start TSS server, it is ready to answer to SHSH request when itunes initiate a restore using firmware 4.1.
You have to start tss server, start itunes, shift-click restore (windows) ore option-click restore (mac) and select firmware 4.1 that you have downloaded.

I suggest you read up and understand how tiny umbrella works

Restore is always done via running itunes. Tiny umbrella is a service (tss server) that helps itunes with the restore process.
