    Default Pre-Jailbreak/Unlock Questions iPhone 3G 4.0.2

Okay, so... I've spent the past 5 nights researching how to do this, and I'm going to jailbreak and unlock my iPhone 3G to use with the Cincinnati-Bell I-Wireless (GSM) carrier and I have some preliminary questions.

First off, I have an iPhone 3G that I won on ebay. All seems well with it, and it came with the seller's original AT&T SIM card. It has iOS 4.0.2 and baseband 05.13.04. I've read http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32604.htm, and http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/32703.htm (these were excellent for getting me up to speed). I've watched quite a few YouTube vids and read other threads at Hackint0sh dealing with redsn0w, ultrasn0w, and other's problems dealing with iPhone 3G. And now I'm basically trying to tie up any loose ends.

I know with iOS 4.0.2 I'm going to need redsn0w to do the jailbreaking. I'm a mac user, but I'm on a PowerBook G4 meaning it's PPC and therefore redsn0w is of no use. I have an old Dell laptop with Windows XP, but it's circa 1999. It's a relic, with something like a 450 MHz processor and an insignificant amount of RAM, but it's all I have. Can I use any computer fitting the requirements for redsn0w (say a friend's computer?) or will I stand to fair well using my Dell for the jailbreak?

    Per Olethros from http://www.hackint0sh.org/f206/163498.htm:
"As you have a 3G, you don't need to downgrade from 4.0.2 or 4.0.1 - you simply need to run redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team] redsn0w 0.9.5b5 and when redsn0w asks for an IPSW point redsn0w at a 3G 4.0 IPSW"
Cool, so from this posting I know I don't have to downgrade since 4.0 - 4.0.2 have the same baseband. I just have to download iPhone1,2_4.0_8A293_Restore.ipsw from trejan.com - iOS (iPhone OS) or iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download , point redsn0w at it and all should go well. When this process is finished I'll move on to Ultrasn0w and unlock the phone.

When running ultrasn0w, do I need to have the previous owner's SIM in the phone or do I need to have the SIM from I-Wireless? Does it need a SIM in it at all to be unlocked?

Thanks much if you've read this far. Am I correct with my information so far, and is there anything else I should be thinking about before moving ahead?

I'm really glad to see a question from someone who has actually researched the issue.

Some clarifications: there is a regularly updated hackint0sh thread with links to the legally available official IPSWs http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm (some iPod touch IPSW require an "upgrade purchase" from Apple to legitimately use them, many other sites ignore this and provide directly links to these IPSW anyway)

Also, is is redsn0w where it is important which SIM card is inserted, not ultrasn0w. See the explanation below.

If the iPhone has not already been activated by the seller and you want legit push notifications - use the AT&T sim to activate via iTunes. Leave it inserted when you run redsn0w. Then install ultrasn0w from Cydia. Finally add pushfix.cydia.info to cydia and install the lockdown patch from there. Finally insert the SIM card from the other carrier.

If you don't care about push notifications and the iPhone is not yet activated. Put the not AT&T sim card in, run redsn0w, install ultrasn0w and you are set.

Great! Thanks for the link to the official IPSWs.

I guess that I just assumed that since the unlock deals with unlocking the iPhone for any carrier, that unlocking is also wound up with the SIM card.

Looks like I'm going to do a little more searching on 'Activation' to get a better grasp of what's involved with the SIM and redsn0w. I haven't run into the phrase 'push notification' or 'lockdown patch' so I'll be doing some searching on those as well.

If I look under Settings-->General-->About-->Carrier on the phone it reads AT&T 7.0 (without the SIM inserted), so I'm assuming that this phone has been left activated by the seller. Am I correct? I guess I just need to get a better grasp on activation/hacktivation and see what this means for the whole process with my iPhone.

    Thanks for the informative response.

Activation (in the iPhone sense) is getting an authorisation from apple (via iTunes) to use the functionality of the iPhone (with the potential exception of making calls, sending text messages and browsing the web via 3G or EDGE/GPRS).

Prior to activating, you are stuck at a "slide for emergency" screen and can only make emergency calls and receive SMS (if you have a SIM inserted)

The activation process includes a unique certificate that is used to enable push notifications and also as part of the authentication for YouTube (and I think maps).

On an iPhone, you can activate with a SIM card from the carrier the iPhone is locked to, or you can use SIM cards that include a generic ID (so called phonebook, universal or n in 1 SIMs)

Activation can break when you try and swap the SIM card for another SIM. (this will always occur if you activate with generic SIM). The iPhone will return to the "slide for emergency" screen and require activation again.

This behaviour can disabled by the lockdown patch - that tricks the iPhone into believing it is always activated.

Back to your questions. If you can use the iPhone, the previous owner has left it activated, hopefully via an AT&T SIM

Unlock refers to the ability to actually make calls, send SMS and use mobile data with any SIM card.

Default hmm... don't know what's happened...

So to give you the lowdown, my iPhone is locked, and in a way that may not be synonymous with what the term 'locked' is usually meant.

In the posts you (Olethros) gave me, you gave two bits of information.
If the iPhone has not already been activated by the seller and you want legit push notifications - use the AT&T sim to activate via iTunes.
    and
If you can use the iPhone, the previous owner has left it activated, hopefully via an AT&T SIM
I'm wondering if I misread you. I placed the AT&T SIM into the iPhone and was going to activate it via iTunes. I did this because I thought "place a call" was what you meant by "If you can use the iPhone". You see, I'd been messing around with it for a few days now, snapping pictures with it, opening apps and such. But as far as its 'phone' qualities were concerned, it was useless. So, while the phone was asleep, I popped out the tray, inserted the AT&T SIM card, and hit the home button. When the "Slide to unlock" screen came on, it gave me a message that it was trying to activate and that it might take a while, but the phone wasn't even plugged into my Mac.

Since then I've had a small lock symbol displayed at the top-middle of the screen and I can't do anything with the phone. It won't let me "slide to unlock". I'll be searching the threads in the meantime looking for a similar situation to see what's happening, but I would like to ask, was my phone activated or unactivated? And why am I in this crazy lockdown mode?

ugh... I'm dumb. The little lock icon is supposed to be on this screen. Noob mistake!

I hope this doesn't mean there's something wrong with my screen sensitivity!

ugh...I'm even dumber. Just found out how to reboot the iPhone--I'm far from savvy--and this has given me back touchscreen sensitivity. Problem solved. Onto jailbreaking!

Quite the contrary. It's a new device (to you anyway), so it's expected that there will be a learning curve (no matter how small it may be, it's definitely there). Aside from that, you've shown exceptional ability to research the issues before posting and asking questions for clarification -- that's more than most of the posters here do. Don't feel bad about not knowing exactly how the device works on the first few times you use it, that's true of any new device -- to your credit though, I wish everyone did as much research as you did to learn about the situation before posting. Would make moderating easier.

Good luck on the jailbreaking, make sure and let us know if you have any other questions!
