Smile Please help fix my iPhone - probably something simple

OK first of all, apologies if this is in the incorrect place. I looked everywhere and couldn't find where it should go.

My wifi stopped working on my iPhone 3GS the other day so I tried to update the phone from 4.3.3 to 4.3.5. The iPhone was second hand and I was unaware it was jailbroken/unlocked, the update didn't work and now I can't use my iPhone.

I don't really know what I am doing and what other information you need. Please help, I will answer any questions as best as possible.

    Thanks for reading.

Problem: the previous owner had loaded the 6.15 baseband (from the iPad) onto this device and also jailbroke/unlocked with ultrasn0w. This can NEVER be reversed and is something the previous owner should have mentioned when selling the phone.

As explained in www.hackint0sh.org/f204/196391.htm - you will now ALWAYS experience problems with restores/updates thanks to the 6.15 baseband (that you cannot remove/downgrade)

Solution #1 - fix recovery 4.3 downloaded from The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella and then tethered jailbreak with redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 7

Solution #2 - assuming you have a saved SHSH blob for 4.3.3 - downgrade with a pwnagetool custom IPSW.

OK that's very helpful thanks. Hopefully I won't have to restore/update again so as long as I get it back up and running it should be OK.

I am trying Solution #1. Downloaded and ran fix recovery 4.3 from The Firmware Umbrella (couldn't find 4.4). Just ran redsn0w 0.9.8 beta 7 and it is asking me:

Please select the corresponding IPSW for your CURRENT firmware.

4.4 was a typo, it's actually 4.3 like you mentioned.

the ipsw should be already on your hard drive (as iTunes downloaded it when it updated your phone to 4.3.5) - it is called iPhone2 1_4.3.5_8l1_restore.ipsw

    That is what redsn0w wants.

I'm selecting the 'install cydia' option. Any idea why I'm getting this? I've tried changing USB port to no avail.

I said 0.9.8 beta 7 not 0.9.8 beta 7b - not sure if that makes any difference but the 0.9.8 beta 7b was a minor update designed to jailbreak iOS5beta7 - maybe it accidentally broke the 4.3.5 support

Have you tried rebooting the device? If you get a failure like this, you need to reboot and enter DFU mode again.

OK I've got that version now. Nothing seems to work.

Tried rebooting and entering DFU mode.

    1. I put the device in DFU mode, and open Fix Recovery 4.3.

That doesn't look good.. AppleNANDLegacyFTL::start: AND init failed suggests that you have a hardware problem.
