Cool new redsn0w 0.9.6b4 gives unexpected error

    Hi there,

I just tried the new jailbreak, unfortunately it just turns the phone into a flashlight.

    Mac OSX 10.6.5

iPhone 4 Model MC605ZP (Hong Kong)
    Version: 4.2.1 (8C148) - clean restore
    BB: 03.10.01
    Network: China Mobile

redsn0w is working until it waits for the phone to reboot, but the phone just boots into a white screen and redsn0w gives an unexpected error (no details) and suggests to change the USB port. Same issue on all 3 ports.

I can just switch off the phone by holding power, switching on again will reboot normally and reset the carrier settings.

    Ideas anybody?

    Thx,
    Mike

Definitely make sure that you have iTunes 10.1 installed.

Do you have any other tools that access the iPhone via the same mechanism as iTunes (iPhone Browser, diskaid iTunnel, etc)? If so make sure these are not running.

Restart your computer with the iPhone connected.

Try redsn0w again, but tick off the "install Cydia" option, then once it has sucessfully installed Cydia, run Cydia and apply any suggested updates.

Then power off the iPhone and try the tethered boot option in redsn0w again.

    Default Same problem

I'm having the same problem with a 3GS from Hong Kong too- locks up as a flashlight and redsn0w says unexpected error. Try rebooting your device and changing USB ports.
    Tried unchecking Cydia...no difference
The common denominator seems to be they are iPhones from Hong Kong.... why is this causing errors?

I miss my jailbreak. I've tried this at least a dozen times... yes... sigh I have the updated iTunes... NO I don't have iPhone browser or diskaid tunnel. I just get a "flashlight"... thank god for tinyumbrella so I can kick it out of recovery. I feel so screwed! I originally had this phone with 4.1 FW and when the news came out (can't remember which website I was viewing) recommended I upgrade to 4.2 so I did... totally f'd me over. I can't begin to tell you how upset I am. Don't know who to be angry at. Just want an answer. Does anyone really KNOW how to fix the flashlight thing? Does Limera1n work yet?

Default Ive got your solution u wont believe

So ive had this problem on my imac and macbook pro. I dont know if this will work on PC.

On an imac use the usb port from the keyboard. Must be a usb keyboard.

On a macbook pro, connect a usb keyboard with the usb out and plug into there.

Using the usb port from the keyboard works. Im using apple slim keyboard.

This sounds crazy but i drove myself crazy trying to figure it out. Also just a note, the macbook pro that its not working on is the older silver keyboard one.
Redsn0w works fine one the newer macbook pros with the black keyboard.

If you have success with this. Please post. Or direct IM me.

    Good luck!

If you read the trusted sources (especially http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ and the twitter streams of the dev team members) - they all said: hold off on going to 4.2.1 if you have a new bootrom 3GS or newer.

Other news sites that simply re-reported the official release but often simplified or summarised it to suggest that it was safe for all devices to go to 4.2.1 jailbroken.

Limera1n won't be updated, geohot is in semi-retirement from the scene. Regardless, he never maintains his jailbreak tools in the longer term - which is one of the biggest reasons we advice people not to use them.

The flashlight thing is that you are stuck at pwned-fake-dfu - possibly using a USB hub could help you get past this.

    Default Fixed!

Had the same exact experience with my 3GS - I'm in California. So, don't think it has anything to do with being in Hong Kong. I upgraded to 4.2.1 in iTunes 10.1 with TinyUmbrella open to preserve my baseband; but kept getting stuck on the "flashlight" part in redsn0w in OSX. So, I re-booted into Windows 7 and tried the Windows version. Worked on the first try. I seem to have more luck jailbreaking my iPhone in Windows than in OSX. If you have bootcamp or access to a Windows machine, give it a try.

What version of OS X do you run?
