iFail: 3g BB stuck with a twist
Okay, sorry in advance as I am not yet wise in the ways of Apple products or information beyond the iPod.
A friend gave me an older iPhone 3G that was JailBroke but not carrier unlocked. The phone was working fine, if you had AT&T. Knowing I was not on that network he attempted to JB it again and thought he had the iPad BB option checked in redsn0w. Opened Cydia and got ultrasn0w. Didn't carrier unlock. Figured out he didn't have the BB change checked (Doh!).
Put all the required files on a flash drive and I went home. Fired up redsn0w the next day to JB again with the BB 6.whatever. (redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2)
Flashed NOR blah blah got to the screen "unpacking bundles" or something of that nature, the progress bar made it to around 50% then cut off.
I've tried restoring with multiple versions of apple and custom ISPWs. Even tried to run redsn0w again and that says "unable to reconize specified ISPW." I think I pretty much bricked the phone as after everything I seem to do kicks it back in the recovery screen (trying to kick it out with tinyumbrella each time). I'm open to help and suggestions....Thanks in Advance. Yes, I'm special ed with Apple products :-p

Simple rule: once you have gone to iPad baseband. You can't restore with stock IPSW. Doing so makes things worse and harder to fix.
Good news, you have a 3G not 3GS - so have more options.
Got access to a Mac?

No sir, no acess to a Mac. I moved to an area where they think technology is the devil. If there are other ways I can try those first. If it comes to it I can track my old photo teacher down at the college campus as he has a Apple notebook.
I may have just downloaded the wrong ipsw. Will be using the search function to see if I can dig up a kosher one.

TinyUmbrella should tell you what your iPhone currently is running (OS and baseband) even if the phone is stuck in recovery mode.
Legit IPSWs are available here: http://www.hackint0sh.org/f127/22056.htm
Custom IPSWs you need to make yourself (which is why I asked if you have a mac) - downloading pre-made custom IPSW from the internet is a huge security risk and is also piracy.
You need to know what iOS version your iPhone is currently running - as there are specific redsn0w versions for each iOS version.
For example, your use of redsn0w 0.9.5b5-2 is part of your problem. This version of redsn0w only works on the 4.0 beta GM - which was different to the final iOS 4.0 that was publicly released.
Recommended/stable redsn0w versions are: 0.9.2 supports (3.0, 3.0.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3) , 0.9.6 beta 2 (supports iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 and 4.1) or 0.9.6 beta 4 or higher (support for iOS 4.1 and 4.2.1)
Once you identify the iOS version that the phone is running and determine the correct redsn0w to use, you then need to download an original IPSW that redsn0w will use to jailbreak/patch the currently installed iOS version.
- iOS 3.0 and 3.0.1 - use the 3.0 IPSW
- iOS 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 - use the 3.1.2 IPSW
- iOS 4.0, 4.0.1, 4.0.2 - use the 4.0 IPSW
- iOS 4.1 - use the 4.1 IPSW
- iOS 4.2.1 - use the 4.2.1 IPSW

Tinyumbrella picks up no information about the phone other than it's in recovery mode (USB cable with iTunes logo).
Guessing the phone had 4.2.1FW I got redsn0w 0.9.6b5. It ran through the whole JB process using the 4.2.1 file from link above. It reboots and I get the long apple screen, black screen, long apple screen again, recovery screen. Again, tiny umbrella doesn't pick up phone info other than recovery mode and ih8sn0w forecast does not pick any thing up.
If you were state side I'd hand you the phone and a case of your choice beverage to fix this thing acting up like a troubled chilld on crack
Wish the donation thing didn't require paypal lol

So here's the tinkering update:
Used the Apple iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore with redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5. Unticked all except "Just enter pwned DFU mode right now" and followed the instructions on next screen. Fired up iTunes and did a shift+restore using same file mentioned above and got out of recovery mode using tiny umbrella. I think I almost messed my pants after it booted and I got the home screen. Cydia and Icy icons.
From tiny umbrella:
Installed firmware version 3.0
Installed BaseBand Version 06.15.00-5.9_M3S2
Now the next issue. I open Cydia and go to add the repo666.ultrasn0w.com it starts downloading the package and a few error boxes pop up then it says Loading Data and crashes/freezes.
Much thanks for the help so far, it's helped get from paper weight to functioning(to an extent).

This sounds quite wrong... Especially if you just installed 4.2.1
Can you publish on pastebin the last restore log? (the one where you installed 4.2.1)

Time to hunt down ye ole digital imaging/photography teacher with his Mac. Just feeling my issues will not be fixed with a vista system and not disrespect the boards rules.

Confirmed file was mislabeled.
Solution: Rode to the campus and had my old teacher make a custom file on his Mac book.
Booted in pwned dfu mode, did shift-restore in iTunes, tiny umbrella, ultrasn0w.
Now it's 4.2.1 with ipad BB
Big thanks for helping the special ed. O you have a pm
