    Default Few Questions about redsnOw

    Hey Guys

I am currently running 2.1 on a 2g iphone(first gen)and want to go to 3.0 using redSnOw. I was just wondering before starting the redSnOw process should I shift click and restore to 3.0 or just hit the update to 3.0 from itunes so all my apps will stay?

2.) If I do it from updating(click update) through itunes do I have to use the file Itunes downloaded for redSnOw or can I use the one I downloaded?

3.) I am going to be doing this from a USB hub is that ok?

4.) I was watching my friend do the process today on his 2g and he just straight updated(clicked update) and then had device not recognized in itunes and just had the plug into computer screen on the phone. Any Idea why this happened and how to avoid that?

Sorry for all the questions guys, just don't want to have any problems doing this.

    1. you should restore, if you update you'll lose all your space where your jailbreak applications are installed, The files and data will still be present but no longer available so you'll loose that space, if you restore you will not have this problem.

    2. The .IPSW that itunes downloads and the one that you manually download are exactly the same, unless you download an already modificated .IPSW with Pwnage tool

    3. i recommend you do this with the file connected directly to the computer not to a USB hub.

    4. yes, do a restore.

    hallo!

i recommend this tutorial: iClarified - Tutorials - iPhone

there are all procedures and necessary downloads. they say, restore is better then update.
i did two 2G iphones, one with update (this one had no applications from cydia) and one with restore, all went ok. all cydia apps are gone initially, but most of them can be reinstalled.
maybe there are apps (from itunes and from cydia) which do not work yet with fw 3.0, but they should be updated sooner or later.

ad 4) when you have the "the plug into computer screen" on the phone, you most probably have to make a "DFU restore" to fw 3.0 and than let redsnow do its work (unlock, activate, jailbreak)

    good luck

thanks for the help guys but just one thing about the USB Hub. The only reason I am using it is becuase my other ports on my computer don't work properly. Is using a direct port a must?

Also when I used quickpwn a while ago I used the hub and did get a usb malfunction error, but everything still worked?

One more thing I can just go to 3.0 from 2.1 correct?

sorry, can not tell you about the usb hub, but usb connection is sometimes triggy together with itunes. give it a try.

there is no problem with a 2G to go from 2.1 direct to 3.0

one questions when you say I will loose the space for jailbreak applications do you also mean the root partion space aswell? Or just the apps I downloaded from Cydia. Also does there tend to be problems with updating through itunes?
