Default Entering DFU Issues - Getting Apple logo almost immediately

    All,

Apologies as I know "can't get my phone into DFU!!1!" threads are all over the place, but I haven't seen one that addresses the problem I'm having and could use some additional troubleshooting help. I've watched a bunch of the demo/guide videos, read numerous how-to instructions as well as following the step-by-step within redsn0w itself, so I'm confident I have a grip on what's SUPPOSED to happen.

    Basic info:
    iPhone 3Gs (older model)
    iOS 4.3.2
    iTunes 10.2.2
    Windows 7

    What I've tried:
    (redsn0w step-bystep):
Phone is connected to computer and powered off. Have tried with itunes both open and closed.
    1. hold power button for 3 sec
    2. hold home button without releasing power button for 10 sec
    3. release power button and continue holding home button for 15+ sec

    What this gets me:

    1. Apple logo appears as soon as I hit the power button
    2. Apple logo disappears ~5 seconds after holding the home button
    3. Apple logo reappears and phone goes into recovery mode after ~7 sec, regardless of when I release the power button (10sec exactly, watching clock. have tried everything down to releasing the power button as soon as the logo disappears, with the same behavior)

In all of the videos I've seen of people putting their phones into DFU mode, the screen stays blank the entire time. Any thoughts as to why I'm seeing the apple logo at the start? Is this normal? Any suggestions?

I get the same behavior when trying other methods as well (same as above without step #1).

    Thanks in advance

The behavior you described certainly isn't expected, when you hold both buttons the normal thing to happend is screen goes black at about the 7th second and it does not re-appear. However, this is what would happen if you released the home button, could it be a malfunctioning home button? Have you tried pressing harder? Does it work normally apart from this?

I'm guessing you're trying to get into DFU mode to restore and fix a problem, feel free to explain what the problem is and we might be able to help you on it.

Thanks for the response, Element. It's (sort of) a relief to know that it's not just me failing at pushing buttons.

I'm actually just trying to jailbreak the phone with the latest release client of redsn0w, but I'm stuck for the moment since I can't get it into DFU mode. I suspected the home button failure too, but I tested the screenshot feature in iOS and that works so it definitely recognizes the initial dual-button push. I think my next step is to just try it plugged in on a different computer. I don't know how or if that would change anything, but some of the stuff I've read online suggested that it might be helpful.

Is there any way to get the 3Gs into DFU mode for jailbreaking purposes without the button pushing? Or a way to jailbreak without DFU while still using redsn0w?

Yeah you should definitely test on another computer, just in case.

Sounds like you are doing this pretty much correctly.
It's possible that your phone isn't properly detecting the power via USB from your computer (try with an official apple wall charger, a different USB cable, a different computer etc). This detection of power is VITAL for the iPhone to enter DFU mode.
You don't need to wait as long as 10 seconds after the logo disappears before releasing the power button. I usually find 6-7 seconds is enough.

I definitely think it's a power/connector issue at this point. The behavior I'm getting is what I would expect if I were to physically unplug the phone when it resets and then immediately plug it back in, triggering it to power itself on. Since I'm holding the home (and power, but it doesn't seem to make a difference) button when it starts to power itself back on, it pops into recovery mode.

I've started releasing the power button as soon as the screen goes blank, but still get the same behavior.

I've tried putting it into DFU mode connected to two different wall-socket power sources, two different usb cords, two different computers (same OS though, I have one more I'm going to try tonight) and see the same behavior each time. I even tried without being connected to a power source, just to see what would happen, and while it didn't put me into DFU mode (expected) it also didn't try to restart.

Thanks for the help/suggestions guys. I'm going to keep poking around at it but I don't hold out much hope for a successful JB as long as it needs to go through DFU. Regarding the corrupt LLB/pwnage workaround described in Element's link - it looks like this method works for older 2G/3G phones and various touches, but I don't think I saw anyone try it on a 3GS. Any thoughts on if it's worth trying with a 3GS and iTunes 10.2?
