Are you sure it wasn't activated when it arrived? If it had an AT&T sim, it had probably activated. After which, redsn0w would not hacktivate, and your other sim wouldn't work.

Non-activated phones show a screen that's not the Home screen and with a 'slide for emergency call' slider.
I don't think it was activated on arrival. Is that possible?

There are two types of activation.

    1. Activation of the SIM - This is done by the carrier and in the first time you bye the SIM.

    2. Activation of the iPhone - Is donne after each restore and it can be made by iTunes to an official carrier (activation), or by redsn0w for non offccial carriers.(Hactivation).

So redSn0w running Hacktivation of the IPhone (2G, 3G, 3Gs). Like as happened with ZiPhone once.

If you use redsn0w you don't need to do a regualar At & t activation with I tunes, you can skip it and run the Dev Team tool (redsn0w + ultrasnow).
    is correct what I say?

Thank you very much, some people told me otherwise and I do not understand why!
I mean who else uses it as it does in Europe?

I am about to buy a 3Gs "as a gift" and I never wanted to be with a mobile phone without coverage because they do not activate properly.

    Thank you!

    I have another question.

    I read on a blog that;

"About a week after the 3GS came out I wanted one, so I went to the Apple store I was near (I was on holiday) and asked to buy a 3GS. I just said I wanted to buy one off contract for the full price and use it on T-Mobile instead. The two guys working there just looked at each other real quickly and after a bit of talking the one said, "well if you're paying full price I do not see why not" and went and rang me up the iPhone.

No activation or anything happened, they just handed me the phone in the sealed box and I went on my merry way. When I got home I played with it for a few days, though still could not use it on T-Mobile yet as this was still a few days before the jailbreak was released.

The nice thing is inside the 3GS came an AT & T sim card, so when I hooked it up to iTunes, activated it even though I did not have an account with AT & T (Not really sure why that worked). A few days later the jailbreak and unlock came out and I have been using my 3GS ever since, not even required hacktivating so push works great, (though obviously the jailbreak and unlock were required for the T-Mobile service). "

In your opinion, this means that the iPhone "as a gift" does not require activation with At & t but they are only sim locked?

Once you putted the At&T SIM card inside the iPhone and connect to iTunes, it automatically Activated.

Really? But I Tunes will not ask you to choose which plan you want when you activate?
Clearly I don't want to activate a plan with them.

Sincerely I am making effort to understand what it means to "activeted" ...and if there is a difference in IPhone taken "as a gift" and those purchased with the plan (in the activations).

Thanks a lot for your help!

In terms of activation there's no diference between the plans. iTunes just checks if the SIM us an official one. Everything else is ignored by iTunes.

And it doesn't ask what type of plan you want. That's made by the guy from the store you buy the iPhone from.

ok, then in my case, At & t not asked me what plan I want because I chose to buy "as a gift", then theoretically be able to choose the plan that I will later.
Obviously we do not ever activate a plan with them

So you say that I need to have an At & t sim in the phone because this is activeted also without a plan?
Otherwise just unbox the iphone launch redsn0w and hacktivate it.

I ask this because I see a video on IPhone 2G that show I tunes as ask what plan you want to activate.

Sorry but I am very confused about this step

    It's simple.

If you have an AT&T SIM plug the iPhone into the PC open iTunes to activate and then run redsn0w to jailbrake.
Otherwise plug the iPhone into the PC and run redsn0w immediately and let it do the hactivation and the jailbraking.

Redsn0w doesn't ask if you want to hactivate or not. He detects if the iPhone is activated or not. If not he Hactivates it.
