I have now successfully jailbroken and can run Cydia, however I appear to have lost my data subscription - I am running it on my old 3G phone with a PAYG SIM that came out of my new 3GS. had data fine before I jailbroke. Any thoughts ?

You took a SIM from an iphone 3GS and put it in your iphone 3G?
So this is a legitimate SIM from an authorized provider right?

If so, then you may have to do some work here.

Easiest way is to restore the iphone 3G, put in your PAGY authorized SIM, let itunes activate it. Once phone is activated you can jailbreak with redsnow again. Redsnow will check if the phone is activated, if it is, it will not perform "hacktivation"
Hopefully your data will be back in action.

Unfortunately, some authors think everyone has some previous background knowledge. I just happened to remember it when I was confronted with the torrent download, and saw the zip file.
