My iphone 3g is currently:
FW 3.1.3
BB 05.11.07

As I understand it, as long as I update with a custom IPSW, I don't need the ipad trick.

But since I am on Windows, I am STILL up a creek without a paddle.
Since ONLY PwnageTool can create custom IPSWs.

I was led to believe that the newest redsn0w was going to include the ability to make custom IPSWs.

Am I missing something or am I still needing to find a Mac?

I don't think redsn0w has that ability yet!

Correct and I doubt that redsn0w will ever get that ability.

Redsn0w is a ramdisk based jailbreak, it is designed to jailbreak the OS currently loaded onto your iPhone

Pwnagetool pre-jailbreas an OS that you then load onto your phone.

Preventing baseband update can only be done via custom IPSW (ie pwnagetool)

However if you can find a trusted friend with a mac, they can make the custom IPSW for you and then send it to you. Also you could pop over to the other half of this forum and learn how to make a hackint0sh run in a virtual machine (all on your current windows machine). Then you could use the hackint0sh OS X VM to run pwnagetool and make your own custom IPSW.

As long as your current jailbreak was via redns0w or pwnagetool you should have no problems restoring a custom 4.2.1 IPSW made with the latest pwnagetool via your windows machine.

My point is that you shouldn't assume that windows = no chance of using pwnagetool. You just need to get a bit creative.

Heh, yea I have done the hackintosh thing. Both a full install and a VMware install. At the time my phone was working fine, so it was more bothersome to mess with getting internet to work (not been able to yet) that it was to see what dev team would put out.

Ah well, I guess I will get cracking on it.
