Default 3GS stuck on Emergency Call Screen

Guys I am at my wit's end.

I have a 3gs that was restored with custom 4.2.1 FW from PwnageTool, I *thought* that was going to jailbreak/unlock, but now I am stuck on the emergency call screen, no sim card installed (I have t-mobile). Trying to use redsn0w and am getting an "unexpected error." It seems to think that it is in DFU mode when it isn't. It won't even let me turn it back on with the DFU mode steps, it just goes straight to jailbreaking then unexpected error. In my earlier attempts I upgraded the baseband to the 06.15 iPad baseband because I thought I could unlock it with redsn0w, but cydia was the white icon and Safari didn't work so I restored again with the custom IPSW and now here I am.

What the heck should I do?? Thanks for all of your help.

tl;dr: PwnageTool custom 4.2.1 restored, iPad baseband, can't activate, can't run redsn0w, up $#!+ creek without a paddle. HELP!

So it says "slide for emergency" ? You're not stuck in recovery mode?

Why don't you have any SIM card inserted? Hacktivation works best when there is a SIM card inserted, particularly with iOS 4.1 and 4.2.1

That's pretty normal when you need to hacktivate/unlock and can be ignored.

    • Are you sure you can use custom IPSW? This only works on old bootrom 3GS.
    • If you have old bootrom and the ability to make your own custom IPSW with pwnagetool 4.1.3, then you should try to include SAM in the custom IPSW
    • Otherwise, make sure the SIM card is inserted, just ignore the message about sim card not supported, run redsn0w and choose "install cydia". That will hacktivate for you. It is not ideal, but it will get you a phone that works (with probably poor battery life)
