Default 3gs not responding in DFU mode!

Hi I am attempting to restore an Iphone 3gs I have no Idea what os version it was running nor do I know what baseband it is running, all I know is it was jailbroken and my friend who bought it decided to try and restore it straight through Itunes! Clever boy - NOT, So now its constantly stuck in recovery mode but I can enter DFU mode, Once I am in dfu mode the phone no longer responds, When I attempt to do a custom firmware restore via I tunes once the phone is in dfu mode I am constantly greeted with the error " The iPhone "Iphone" could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible" I Have attempted many time to do a custom restore with Redsn0w and tried to "Fix recovery" in Tiny umbrella. The only information I could get was when I attempt to do a legit Restore itunes pulled down 4.2.1, I presume this means the iphone has 4.1 onboard perhaps with the ipad BB????, ANy how as expected the legit restore throws an error 1015 Any help greatly appreciated just stuck in a loop! and cannot restore via a custom firmware

Should go without saying that I have no blobs and tiny umbrella cannot retrieve any
