Default 3GS hangs when respring / restart

    Hi guys,

I have been using factory unlocked 3GS, jailbroken at 3.0 using redsnow with files stored at Cydia, serial no ***31******, model MC133MY, firmware 04.26.08.

No problem (except can't use bluetooth) until recently when I add second folder for my apps using Categories. It hangs every time I respring. Turning off and on (home + on/off button) would do the same. The phone can be used only when the screen comes back in safe mode and restart from there.

Any idea on how to resolve the problem?

I am also thinking of upgrading to 3.1.2 using redsnow if it could solve the problem plus there's quite a few apps that requires 3.1.

    Questions:
    1. Apart from the apps, are there any other benefits upgrading to 3.1.2?
    2. Will I lose all my purchased apps from cydia and appstore, contacts, notes etc?

Anyway, the main thing is to get the phone to function as before. It takes quite a while to get the phone back to function once it hangs and it really sucks.

Appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

    Hardy

Since it looks like you have one of the early model phones, it is possible to do what you're looking to do. The bootloader in your phone should be susceptible to the old exploit which means you should be able to flash a hacked 3.1.2 onto the device without having to worry about SHSH hashes, etc.

    To answer your specific questions,

    1) From 3.0 there isn't too much different. App compatibility is a big thing and there have been some additions to the OS since 3.0 that are available in 3.1/.2. There isn't anything life changing that comes to mind right now.

    2) I hate to say I'm not sure -- I haven't purchased any apps from Cydia except for MyWi, and I did that so recently that I haven't had a chance to upgrade my firmware and check. I am going to assume this is a contingency that saurik has planned for, so you should be able to just re-download the apps after the upgrade. It's also worth mentioning that if you do an upgrade (not a restore), the phone will not need the re-sync and all of your jailbroken apps will be available on the phone immediately after the upgrade. Someone who has done this more than me should probably chime in here, I don't want to send you in the wrong direction....

    Thanks!

The cydia purchased apps are tied to the google checkout or facebook account you use to purchase them. So you can simply login again and re-download them again after the restore. There are also apt-backup/restore apps in Cydia that will backup and restore your Cydia installed apps. I have never tested these so can't comment.

I used Rock once to do a package save and restore and that pretty much completely destroyed my phone until I restored from scratch -- I wouldn't recommend trying that at this point. I wasn't able to make AptBackup work, it ran before but running it again never did anything after a restore, so I can't comment on how well it works (except to say it didn't work for me at all!)

    Good luck!

It has gone to worst now that whenever call or sms comes in it hangs. I tried to delete all my music and photos and sync it, it got slightly better but problem still there. Well to be fair to Categories, I'm not sure whether that causes it or simply becoz I dropped the phone couple days earlier. Categories really useful tho..

I suppose if I choose "restore" at itunes it will restore back to 3.0 and then I would need to use redsnow like the first time, that correct?

Alternatively I could follow the instruction such as in iclarified to restore/upgrade to 3.1.2 and use latest redsnow (0.9.2) to JB, right guys?

n1ckn4m3 - When you mentioned upgrade (not restore), what do you mean by that? How is it done? Is it just simply flash the hacked 3.1.2 and no need to run redsnow afterwards?

Looks like one of the above needs to be done. I'll try pkgbackup to see if its useful and give my feedback here. Not so sure how to make all my sms & notes intact though. Will restore erase it all?

    Appreciate all feedback.

    Cheers

Thanks for taking out the s/n. Didn't know better..

Make sure iTunes makes a backup of your phone (this generally happens at sync but you can also manually request this by right clicking on the iPhone icon in the sidebar)

With your symptoms - I would not upgrade.

I would navigate to the folder on your computer where the iPhone backups are stored and make a copy/zip of the folder that represents your latest iPhone backup.

On Mac this folder is ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

See iPhone and iPod touch: About backups for more info on this feature.

By taking a copy of the latest iPhone backup folder within this Backup folder - this gives you the flexibility to test different scenarios to try and resolve your problem.

My advice is to restore to 3.0 (assuming you have SHSH for that on Cydia)
Then restore from iTunes backup. See if problems disappear.
If not restore iPhone again and set up iPhone as new. See if problems disappear.

If that is the case, you can selectively restore some files from your backup manually (like SMS or call history, or high scores in a game) using SSH

The reason why I say that you need to take a copy of your last MobileSync backup is that itunes overwrites this backup when you either set up your iPhone as new or after you have restored from backup and then synced again, the backup is overwritten with a newer backup.

You can do an upgrade just by plugging the phone in and telling it to upgrade the firmware. If you do a shift-restore or hit the restore button, it will need to re-sync afterwards. That said, it's a moot point -- as Oletheros points out, since the apps are sync'd with your google checkout or facebook account, there is no need. It is generally bad practice to do upgrades vs. restores, as you can have serious problems left by files that hang around. Battery life issues, activation issues, YouTube issues, etc.

I'd recommend what Oletheros said to figure out what specifically is the crux of your issue.

Just to update. The hangs was less frequent after I emptied the phone leaving only the necessary apps and files. Sync as frequent as possible and after a week or so, its gone!! Never got the chance to use pckgbackup.

Thanks all for the advice. Still thinking on whether to take risk by upgrading to 3.1 or not, or is it there's no risk at all and I'm just worrying too much?

    cheers

No point presently -- hold off for two weeks until the iOS 4.0 GM has been publicly released and then for the jailbreak and unlock tools for it. You'll get a lot more upgrading from 3.x to 4.x than you would going from 3.x to 3.1.x and you'll be able to make sure 4.0 FW and 4.0 Baseband have jailbreak and unlock before doing anything further -- that's the safest bet at this point.
