    Default 3.13 update (phone 3g BB 5.12)??

I've just been handed a jb'ed (redsnow) and unlocked 3g running 3.13 and on 5.12.01 BB. Is there a safe and working update I can apply to it? Looking to get it into a better iOS but unsure which one to go for. Links would be really appreciated! Thanks in advance for any help.

iOS 5 is not available for the iPhone 3G, unfortunately, so you can't get onto the newest and greatest.

Your best bet would be to go to iOS 4.x, which should be possible so long as you're already jailbroken. You'd want to make a custom iOS 4.2.1 using PwnageTool 4.2, then restore to the phone in DFU mode. Make sure you block the baseband update with PwnageTool to ensure that you keep your older (and unlockable) baseband. You may need to use TinyUmbrella at the end of this process to 'Kick the phone out of recovery' mode, as it may end up in recovery due to the blocking of the baseband update.

Once that's done, reinstall ultrasn0w from Cydia to get your cell service back, and if you use push notifications heavily, download SAM, use it to revert your activation to stock, and activate using iTunes with your carrier SIM inserted to get legit push tokens and certs.

Hi there-- so I was thinking of following this tutorial--does the IPSW listed in here preserve the baseband (mine is 5.12).
Also, I no longer have the carrier SIM-- but phone is unlocked, jbed, and untethered. Would i really need carrier SIM? Is there any way to update it via Cydia given that the phone is already jailbroken and unlocked?
    Many thanks for any help!

hi all- in case anyone is curious how to update this way-- I used snowbreeze (expert mode ) for 4.2.1 and made a custom IPSW in expert mode, and included hactivation (same can be done on pwnage tool for Mac users-- I tried it on my Mac too). Then I continued with snowbreeze putting my phone into DFU and got to a green screen which allowed me to flash custom IPSW to phone via Itunes. I did a restore on Itunes (holding shift key) and pointed to the IPSW made by snowbreeze on desktop. Then when finished went to cydia/ultrasnow as per usual.

Sorry I missed the last post, but glad to see you did what I would have recommended anyway (you made your own custom .IPSW instead of downloading one that you can't verify and could have upgraded your baseband as the nicest bad thing it would do), and I'm glad to see you got up to 4.2.1 successfully with no issues! Let us know if you need anything else.
