Default 2G running 1.1.3, how to upgrade to 3.0

I have the original 2g version of iphone running os 1.1.3. I wanted to upgrade to os 3.0. I tried following the instructions in
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows)

During Step 2, while restoring the file "iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw", I get an error "iphone restore unknown error" and thats it. Now I am stuck.

    What do I do ??

Thanks in advance for any help

Was your iPhone working on 1.1.3? Was it unlocked in any way?

yes it was jailbroken using ziphone software in 2008 and it was working.

Should I set it to factory default and retry ? If so, how ?

Or should I upgrade my iTunes to 9.0 and try update the software on my iphone ? But now since my iphone is stuck at restore, iTunes does not recognize the iphone.

    Thanks for your help.

I am new to this forum.. where to check the stickies.

The stickies are posts that always appear at the top of forum sections, they usually relate to commonly asked questions.

You only need to be running iTunes 8.2 or later to restore to OS 3.0 no need to go to 9.0 unless you really want to. Remember to always restart after installing or upgrading iTunes.

What error code do you get when restoring to 3.0?

Some versions of ziphone screwed up the baseband (the part of the iPhone that runs the phone/wifi/bluetooth functions).

Saying I would recommend that you try a few more things regarding restoring to 3.0 before panicking about problems potentially caused by ziphone. Also generally the problems caused by ziphone can be reversed.

I have iTunes 8.0.2. I used this to restore. Was that the problem ?? should I have used itunes 8.2 ??

OOPs I forgot to write down the exact error # what I saw.
It said something like "unknown error during restore".

So where do I go from here.. My phone is hosed..
I mean my phone is not being recognized by iTunes anymore. I turn it on, it just shows the image of iTunes and cable connecting to it.

I searched the forum for similar problems.. but could not find any suggestions how to proceed.

    Thanks for your help.

Don't panic, it is not completely screwed. Upgrade your iTunes to 8.2 (or higher). Restart your computer. Put your iPhone in DFU mode using the guide in this link http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/54082.htm

iTunes should detect the iPhone in DFU mode. Restore your iPhone with an official apple 3.0 ipsw. You should be fine.

It is really very very hard to permanently screw up your 2G iPhone.

Thanks for your continued help. I really appreciate it.

You said restore to official apple 3.0 ipsw -- when I search for it.. there are two kinds of files that I am seeing
    iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw -- 234 MB
    iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw -- 297 MB

Which one should I use ?? Mine is a 2g iphone with 8GB.

To restore/jailbreak after I reset phone to DFU mode, should I still follow the instructions in the link
iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock/Jailbreak Your iPhone 2G on OS 3.0.x Using RedSn0w (Windows)

Thanks once again for your reassurance and guidance.
