left out a bit of detail...

I am trying to use a Vodafone Contract SIM in the phone. (hence my reason to want a unlock)

The Iphone was purchased as a gift to be as a Pay as you Go SIM (O2 SIM) in the UK, but I want to use the Vodafone SIM.

    1. When I run cydia and try adding the source of yellowsn0w I get the message, "The indicated repository could not be found. This could be because you are trying to install a legacy..."

    2. So, I thought I would simply try putting in my official 02 sim but this does not get any service. (QuickPwn has run successfully)

    3. If I just want to take the Phone back to apple do I just do a restore in Itunes (just click on restore) and it will go back to factory default? (so they cannot detect it was jailbroken) ??

    Sorry... and thanks!
Yes if you need to return it just DFU restoring with itunes will remove the unlock & Quickpwn process.

Maybe you should try DFU restoring again to 2.2fw with the 02 Pay&Go Sim inserted see if it activates & unlocks automatically. If its doesn't something is wrong

Looks like you have jailbroken and possibly activated the phone but you have not unlocked it yet.

1st Turn on your wireless so you can access the net
    Run Cydia
When cydia has finished setting up touch the 4th icon on the bottom and the click Sources then edit then add and type in http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com then click add source.
Then click on sections 2nd on bottom go to utilities i think and look for yellowsn0w and install it. when all finished should be ok you might have to flick out the sim a couple of times to get it started .
alright, but any reason at the moment it will not pick up even my O2 SIM???

Alright, I will do the DFU restore as below:

    1. Dock phone on PC and load iTunes.
    2. Once iTunes recognizes the phone, select the phone
    3. Click the restore button and agree to the prompts. iTunes will download the latest firmware and restore your device.

    Correct??

I did try the DFU restore (as outlined above) with the O2 SIM inserted (twice now) and it goes into "emergency call" mode. Only when I run QuickPwn will it actually go past the "emergency calls" and only then goes it actually load the Springboard.

Please do let me know any additional thoughts... or comments.

That's correct but my personal choice would be to force DFU and deep restore instead.

When it finishes restoring with the 2.2fw let itunes detect the phone connected to the PC with your pay&go sim installed.

It should activate & unlock by its self, if it doesn't let me know what message you get from itunes.

Do you mean it goes into restore mode with the itunes logo & the lead instead of restoring? or does it complete the restore & then go to the slide to emergency/activation screen?

    Smile

    Thanks.

Firmware version is currently: 2.2 (5G77)

    Modem Firmware: 02.28.00

Firmware and Modem firmware have been upgrade since purchase.

Could you explain the process for force DFU and deep restore???

Just now did a DFU restore with the 2.2fw and let itunes detect the phone connected to the PC with my O2 pay&go sim installed.

    ITunes message says:

"iTunes cannot activate your iPhone because the SIM card is not inserted or a SIM PIN is required"

Yes the SIM card is inserted.

I have visited the following page and already been thru the steps:

    Here

The iPhone displays the default IMEI number on the screen: 00 499901 064000 0 but does display a ICCID number.

Have you tried using your Nokia to switch Sim lock off and then putting it back in the iphone & let itunes detect the phone again? If not give that a try.

If that doesn't work I'd contact 02 and ask them Y the phone is not activating with itunes.

    Thanks for your continued help.

I will do the restore following the tutorial on:
    http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=1034

Anything else you suggest before I take it to Apple Genius? (as I mentioned before the Iphone was jailbroken)

I tried the Nokia SIM you mentioned and had no luck.

So.. just to confirm... I just go thru the tutorial mentioned above and Apple will not be able to detect it was jailbroken?

    Thanks... for ALL your help.....

    Update....

I took the IPhone for the "Genius" who had a look over the phone... (nothing in great details)... and he himself tried to do a DFU restore... and didn't have any luck.

Changed me over to a new phone.

    Thanks for all the help...
