Lightbulb is there a technical reason for downgrade being not possible?

    hi,

to my knowledge iphone 3g has a flash drive on which all the updates are issued to be written by apple. these updates can be either software (a flavor for .nix) firmwares or base band firmwares (which affect the 2g/3g modem) and they both are written onto the *same* flash drive (which is either 8GB or 16GB).

pwn tools can write onto this flash drive as well, just like apple itunes does.

now, what i dont get is why it is not possible to *pry out* a flash drive out of a pwnable iphone (i mean one that has the vulnerable version and base band firmwares), get the raw image, copy it and write it with the pwnage tools onto the iphones that have been upgraded to latest firmwares, which are yet unpwnable.

Could you enlighten me on this issue?

    1) The software is not written onto the same flash chip, the baseband software is written to the baseband processor.

    2) PWNAGE cannot write onto a baseband with the new software because no vulnerabilities have been found in this revision.

    3) There is code in the baseband bootloader that prevents downgrading.

Thus, one cannot downgrade until a hole is found in the new software to circumvent the downgrade prevention.
