How harmful would pwning 2.1 with 2.0.02 be?
I remember when 2.0.2 was released you could quickpwn with the same fw as 2.0.1 with no side effects since Apple didnt change some files. Is this the same as with 2.1? I am not asking if anyone has/will try it but am asking on a technical level is it harmful? I also don't want answers such as "so and so says DON'T DO IT!!!" I am looking for logical answers. Thanks

if the baseband does not change after the update, your phone remains unlock but you will loose the jailbreak and apps installed on the iphone. If you did not perform the update but choose to DFU restore with the new firmware then your phone will not be activated so you cannot use it until you can create the new custom fw.
It is not harmful but you will loose the jailbreak and possibly not be able to make call IF the baseband changed.
The logical answer is to wait for pwnage/winpwn/quickpwn to be updated. That way, you will have a fully unlocked jailbroken phone.
Scatter reports that 2.1 fw does not change baseband. YMMV

I think you misunderstood my question. My question is about trying to jb/pwn 2.1 using the 2.0.2 fw. I am talking about pwning not updating and losing jb

What is that ?
jailbreak/pwn 2.1 using 2.0.2 fw ??
the only way to jailbreak 2.1 firmware is to create custom fw 2.0 by using pwnagetool/winpwn if supported or quickpwn if supported.
the soft "update" via itunes keeps the activation but knock out the jailbreak.

When 2.0.2 came out I was able to quickpwn it using the 2.0.1 IPSW. I was tricking quickpwn into thinking .02 was actually .01. I was told the reason this worked is because .02 only included small changes and it hadnt changed the files that are modified when quickpwning

You can try it. I don't think it will break your phone. QuickPwn modifies your current firmware. You can always do a DFU restore if it fails.

dont do it. yourl have to restore, as the phone keeps restarting itself when itunes tries to sync it.
