Default Suggestions for unsatisfied user on 2.0.1?

    Hey guys,
I recently upgraded from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 using winpwn and was initially happy. However, the slowness of 2.0.1 is just getting to me and I want to change. I don't want to give up my appstore (so don't want to revert back to 1.1.4) nor do I want to give up cydia/installer (so I can't go to 2.1 as of now?).

What are my choices? I assume 2.0.2 is not much better as far as the speed issue?

If so, do I just need to wait for quickpwn (I have a mac) to be compatible with 2.1fw?

Go for 2.1 it is worth it. Use quickpwn or Pwnagetool 2.1 both are for mac

But won't I lose Cydia and installer if I upgrade to 2.1 using quickpwn or pwnagetool?

Thanks. That's great to hear! So am I correct in understanding that I need to download iTunes 8, upgrade my custom 2.0.1 firmware to 2.1 using iTunes, and then use Quickpwn to get the rest setup?

Last step depends: If you are on a Mac - assuming we talk an "old" iPhone 2G - you could use PwnageTool 2.1 to create a custom 2.1 firmware then and restore to it - job done. If you are on Windows you will have to wait a bit, Winpwn 3 is under development (http://www.winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page)

Great. Thanks for the helpful posts. Yeah, I have a mac and a 2g so I should be fine.

Just wanted to confirm the steps as if I just plug in my phone and open quickpwn, it says it doesn't recognize my current fw, so I assumed I needed to use itunes 8 to upgrade to 2.1 first but wanted to make sure the steps.

So is it better to just use pwnagetool to create a 2.1 custom firmware, and then restore it?

I was thinking by using quickpwn, i could upgrade without having to restore. So I assumed the steps would be:
    1. upgrade to iTunes 8
    2. using iTunes 8 to upgrade to 2.1 fw (should still be jailbroken and unlocked?)
    3. use quickpwn to add cydia and installer

You can go this way. Small difference. After step 2 the baseband will still be unlocked, show the carrier, but locked again, not jailbroken).
Quickpwn 2.1 will take care for that in step 3 plus add Installer and Cydia.

As I said the above will work. I used a different approach on my iPhones. I always treat them like computers when major upgrades are around. So here is what i did (having iTunes 8 already installed)

    1. DFU restore to firmware 2.1 (Apple original) in iTunes (baseband is still unlocked, but even pwnage is gone)
    2. Create a custom firmware 2.1 with PwnageTool 2.1
    3. DFU restore to the custom firmware with optio-restore in iTunes

This works perfectly. I was on quickpwnd 2.0.2, upgraded in itunes to 2.1 (still unlocked and activated, but unjailbroken). Quickpwn 1.1 for mac takes care of that and adds cydia and installer.

    Cheers

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm going to try upgrading to 2.1 then today. Since I want to keep the data I have on it, for now, I'm going to just upgrade through iTUnes, but nice to know the alternatives as well. Really appreciate the help!
