Unusual problem
I think maybe you should start fresh with a restore and Quickpwn again

i myself have tried, with a 02 sim (1st) and the and orange sim, (2nd) but get a message saying different sim detected, please connect to itunes, when the orange sim is in,
its displaying the orange logo in the top right where it should be, and when the o2 sim is in it works fine, no message, and the its now jail break'd, installer etc are there.....
what do i need to do to make it work fine with a non o2 sim, (orange sim)

I had the same problem as the OP. I bought a 1st gen iphone used that was locked to AT&T and was on firmware 2.0.1. I upgraded to 2.1 via iTunes 8, quickpwned via QP2.1 (cydia+install+unlock) with AT&T sim card in then popped in the T-Mobile USA sim card expecting a signal. Got nothing except "slide for emergency." I re-QP2.1 again this time with the TMob USA sim card in checking all available options, but still "slide for emergency." When I plugged the phone into iTunes it told me the sim wasn't recognized.
My solution: I have iTunes 7.7.1 on another computer. I put the phone in DFU (not restore) and restored to 2.0.2 with original Apple firmware with the TMob sim card in. I then used WinPwn 2.5 to make a custom firmware 2.0.2 (unlock, cydia only this time) and followed the directions to get the custom firmware on the phone. I ended up with an unlocked, activated phone with 2.0.2 firmware. I am going to now upgrade to 2.1 via iTunes and then QP2.1 with Cydia. Hopefully this helps.

QuickPwn will only activate if your phone is not already activated.
Moral of the story: If you want to activate, always do the restore and QuickPwn with the foreign SIM, not the official carrier SIM.
