Default [Quickpwn 1.1][2.0.2->2.1 Update]Major failiure, now fixed...

After doing two phones successfully (2.0.2 Pwnage ->iTunes 2.1 update ->Quickpwn), I did the same with my girlfriend's phone but after the update to 2.1 in iTunes it got stuck in a boot-up loop displaying the Apple logo and also the spinning wheel. Weirdly iTunes still recognised the phone (and I managed to pull all her photos off it with PhoneView) but it would not boot up. Tried everything to kick it out of the loop but nothing would work. Plugged it into another computer that is running 7.7.1, put it in DFU and tried to restore it using a previous Pwnage IPSW 2.0.2 but I just kept getting the 1600 error and nothing I did would make it work.

Eventually the only thing I could do was put it in DFU and restore the phone to 2.1 in iTunes 8 and then luckily Quickpwn seems to have sorted it out.

Not quite sure what happened, I'd consider myself a fairly experienced user and did everything the same on all 3 phones. The only thing I can think of that would make her phone stand out was that she had quite a lot of stuff installed compared to mine (but not excessive) which made the iTunes backup take quite a long time.

    *shrugs shoulders*

I'm just posting the experience, it probably shouldn't be in Quickpwn area as it wasn't Quickpwn that failed but then Quickpwn did save me so....

I can add my experience to yours - after a PwnageTool restore to 2.1, the phone booted and activated as normal. When restoring my rather large backup, after the restore reboot I would get the boot logo + spinning wheel reboot loop.

Restoring as a new phone worked, but not ideal. My thinking is that a fresh 2.1 install is not compatible with a backup file that has been through the Cydia wringer, what with a different password for root, moved applications folders and prefs, et al. I attempted a restore a second time, only applying the backup after launching Cydia and applying all updates. This did not work either.

My next thought was to restore to an unjailbroken 2.1, apply my backup, then QuickPwn. This failed as well, my only recourse was to restore and set up as a new phone.

So I've discovered a little more:

QuickPwn and PwnageTool backups are incompatible with one another. A backup created with a running system jailbroken by QuickPwn will not load on a system created by PwnageTool, and vice-versa.

When jailbreaking by QuickPwn, the Applications directory and a few others are all symlinked over to the Media partition - so you can install as many apps as you like. You can see this linking going on the first time you launch Cydia, which will report itself as "Reorganizing". During this reorganization process, stuff is shuffled around, and the location of important data is written into your backup.

Jailbreaking with PwnageTool will leave everything where it normally is, typically a custom PwnageTool image will have a larger OS partition, so that reorganization never needs to happen. When you apply a QuickPwn backup to a PwnageTool image, something is misplaced and that creates the boot logo + spinner reboot cycle.

It's my guess that a PwnageTool backup would be fine with a system that is about to be QuickPwned, but I'm tired of restoring at this point and will leave it to my colleagues to test this.
