Do you have any apps installed?. If you do, try uninstalling a few and see what happens. If it doesn't works, try a DFU restore.

It is my opinion that we are approaching the hardware limits of our phones, what with apps requiring more and more memory. Particularly when I have a few apps running in background, or when trying to email a large video file I have shot, this happens to me. It is my belief that we have pushed these chips about as far as they can go without regard to their limitations (which is what Jobs warned us all about and which is, after all the point of hacking). Until faster chips, more memory, etc., come out, try keeping track of what you were doing when your phone crashed. I don't think that it is a software problem per se, but just due to the fact that we are pushing these devices to do much more than their designers intended. You could always go back to 1.1.4, which was pretty stable (though safari crashed a lot for me on 1.1.4).

Ironically, I find that a lot of the official apps are the biggest memory hogs, and cause the most frequent crashes: Safari, Facebook, the New York Times, etc...also, web pages do a whole bunch more than they used to, with lots of Java, javascript, etc., which uses up memory. Safari is really a pretty feeble browser, imho.

Or, on the other hand, I could be completely wrong. This is just my impression.

Happened to me a few times on 2.2. Didn't really see this issue on 2.1. Think this is an issue with the firmware itself.
