Install BootNeuter from Cydia and make sure autolock is set to never before launch it.
Bootloader version 3.9/4.6 (use default)
neuter = on
fakeblank = off
unlock = on
Tap flash button on the top right corner and follow its instruction.
Cheers~~

I am having the same problem, redoing the whole 2.1 unlock/jail process again, just to be sure i have made everything right . . .
What do you mean with this "Autolock"
It seems, it regonizes the SIM, because it asks for the PIN, it accepts the PIN, but then there is no service.
If i put my SIM in my older phone, it works . . .

I have the same problem with my 2G iphone and tried to use a different SIM. And I tried the following, and now my iphone is really unlocked, tried T-mobile and some other sim card.
The main point:
1. TAKE OUT THE SIM CARD, during the whole jailbreak/unlock process with quickpwn 2.1.
2. When shift-restore in itune, restore as a new phone. (You can always restore the synced data back later).
When the jailbreak/unlock process is done. Then insert whatever SIM card you have.
Good luck to everyone !!! Let me know if this work for you.

I thought it was better to leave the sim card in the phone during the entire process. Can any "expert" elaborate?

Solution
Hello there
The fact is that I dont really know why, but quickpwn for mac does not work as good as Windows version. Im a mac user, and I hate that mac version does not unlock iPhone 2G.
What you need to do is connect your iphone(doesnt mather that it says no service) to a windows computer running iTunes 8.01 and latest version of quickpwn, there, you check the box where it says unlock baseband. You will be asked for the bootloaders, both are in www.iphone-hacks.com Then follow QuickPwn instructions and your ready! Enjoy your unlocked iPhone.

I always leave the SIM card inside the phone.
If phone has PIN number, make sure to remove it before doing JB/ACT/UNLOCK stuff

Install BootNeuter and flash the baseband to get back the service

In quickpwn there isn't a box to check for unlocking.
Is there?
Am I missing something. I understood quickpwn did everything automatically and you couldn't change anything even if you wanted to.
Having the same issue of a jailbroken phone (finally) but no service.
